Pity it is not available new. 3.5 tonnes towing, in a smaller build size, like the D21 had, would sell well with farmers, the one I have purchased is plenty big enough, bordering on clumsy, but there are not many options, Ford are unreliable engines, Toyota out priced, Isuzu unreliable and expensive repairs, will not have another!

Nissan Navara (2014-2022) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Large load bed and generous payload | Apple CarPlay and Android Auto unavailable before 2019 facelift |
| More car-like to drive than most pick-ups | The SsangYong Musso has a longer warranty |
| Punchy and fuel-efficient diesel engine | Not as wieldy as a conventional SUV |
Quick Summary
The Nissan Navara (2014-2022) is a highly capable pick-up truck that has become increasingly popular in the UK thanks to favourable tax treatment. Available in both double-cab and king-cab configurations, it offers impressive practicality with a large load bed and generous payload capacity of up to 1,315kg on chassis models. The coil-spring rear suspension delivers a more car-like ride than traditional leaf-spring rivals, whilst the punchy 2.3-litre diesel engine is available with either 161bhp or 187bhp, producing 313lb ft or 332lb ft of torque respectively. Towing capacity reaches 3,500kg across all variants.
Running costs are highly competitive, with fuel economy among the best in the pick-up class—early models achieved 44.9mpg, improving to 46.3mpg post-2016, and 40.4mpg for 2019 facelift versions. Service intervals are lengthy at 12,500 miles or two years for later examples, keeping maintenance costs low. The Navara earned a four out of five Euro NCAP safety rating and features autonomous emergency braking on higher specifications. Most models come with part-time 4WD and a six-speed manual gearbox, with a seven-speed automatic available on high-spec double-cabs.
Best for: Commercial users, those requiring substantial payload and towing capacity, budget-conscious buyers seeking low running costs, and those preferring a more car-like driving experience than traditional pick-ups.
Not ideal for: Buyers seeking maximum manoeuvrability comparable to conventional SUVs, those requiring Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on pre-2019 models, or those wanting the longest warranty coverage available.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Navara | 4/5 | 4.1/5 | 31.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Ford Ranger | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Volkswagen Amarok | 4/5 | N/A | 33.1% | 3.9/5 |
| Mitsubishi L200 | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.7% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Navara if: You require substantial payload and towing capacity, seek low running costs and lengthy service intervals, prefer a more car-like driving experience, or need a versatile commercial vehicle with strong fuel economy.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum manoeuvrability comparable to conventional SUVs, require the latest infotainment technology on all models, or want the longest warranty coverage available in the pick-up class.
Competitive Position: The Nissan Navara (2014-2022) stands as a well-rounded pick-up truck offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst the Ford Ranger edges ahead on user ratings and overall CarGurus score, the Navara matches it on expert rating and offers superior fuel economy and lower running costs. The Volkswagen Amarok provides more power but at the expense of efficiency, whilst the Mitsubishi L200 offers competitive value but with a lower expert rating. The Navara's combination of car-like handling, punchy diesel efficiency, generous payload, and competitive pricing makes it an outstanding choice for both commercial and personal use.
