Peugeot 208 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Sharp and stylish looks	Not as much fun as a Ford Fiesta
Comfortable and quiet	Only scored four out of five in Euro NCAP tests
Impressive battery-electric version	Quite pricey as a new car

Quick Summary

The Peugeot 208 is a stylish and appealing supermini that has long been a popular choice in its class. With sharp, contemporary design both inside and out, it offers an attractive interior with quality soft-touch materials and modern styling. The 208 is available with multiple powertrain options, including a turbocharged petrol engine, mild-hybrid variants, and an impressive all-electric e-208 with up to 268 miles of range. Its agile handling and comprehensive standard equipment make it a compelling proposition for style-conscious buyers seeking a practical city car.

However, the 208 shows its age in some areas. The ride can feel firm compared to rivals, and some powertrains lack polish, particularly the mild hybrids with their lazy throttle response. Practicality is limited, with cramped rear seats and a modest boot, whilst the distinctive i-Cockpit driving position may feel unusual to some. Build quality, whilst initially impressive, reveals some inconsistencies upon closer inspection. Running costs are reasonable, though reliability ratings for the 208 specifically lag behind the brand average, and warranty cover is fairly basic on combustion-engined models.

Best for: Style-focused buyers seeking an attractive supermini with modern technology, those interested in an affordable electric option, and drivers prioritising low running costs and comprehensive standard equipment.

Not ideal for: Tall passengers requiring spacious rear accommodation, buyers seeking engaging driving dynamics comparable to a Ford Fiesta, or those prioritising maximum reliability and long-term durability.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the 208 if: You prioritise style and modern design, seek an affordable electric supermini option, or value comprehensive standard equipment and low running costs.

Consider alternatives if: You require spacious rear seating, demand engaging driving dynamics, or prioritise proven reliability and durability over style.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot 208 is a stylish and well-equipped contender in the supermini market, offering attractive design and impressive standard features. Whilst it matches rivals like the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris on overall CarGurus ratings, it lags behind on expert ratings and reliability. The 208 excels in value for money and user satisfaction, making it an appealing choice for style-conscious buyers. However, those seeking superior driving dynamics or maximum reliability may find the Polo or Yaris more compelling, whilst the Renault Clio offers comparable style at a similar price point.
