Peugeot RCZ (2009-2015) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Entertaining to drive	Cramped rear seats
Surprisingly practical for a coupe	Some reliability issues
The RCZ R is very quick	The looks aren't to all tastes

Quick Summary

The Peugeot RCZ (2009-2015) is a stylish, distinctive coupe that defied expectations when it launched. Based on the 308 hatchback platform, it features striking design elements including a double-bubble roof and distinctive roof arches. Available with 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engines in three power outputs (154bhp, 197bhp, and 266bhp in the RCZ R) or a 163bhp 2.0-litre HDi diesel, the RCZ delivers engaging driving dynamics with responsive handling that makes it impressively sporty for a front-wheel-drive car. A 2013 facelift refined the front grille and specifications, whilst the ultra-rare RCZ R variant offers genuine sports car performance with 266bhp and a 5.6-second 0-60mph time.

Practicality is respectable for a coupe, with a useful 384-litre boot, though rear seats are cramped and the lack of a hatchback opening can make loading larger items tricky. Running costs are reasonable thanks to shared components with mass-produced models, with the 2.0 HDi achieving 54mpg and the RCZ R surprisingly delivering 44mpg. Servicing is competitively priced through Peugeot's fixed-price scheme, and insurance groups range from 27-33 for mainstream models to group 42 for the RCZ R. Whilst some reliability concerns exist, many examples have been well-maintained by enthusiastic owners, and around 12,000 RCZs were sold in the UK, providing good choice on the second-hand market.

Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish, entertaining coupe with engaging handling, those wanting something distinctive and different, and enthusiasts interested in the high-performance RCZ R variant.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising rear passenger space, those requiring maximum practicality, or those concerned about potential reliability issues without specialist inspection.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the RCZ if: You're seeking a stylish, entertaining coupe with engaging handling, want something distinctive and different, or are interested in the high-performance RCZ R variant.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise rear passenger space, require maximum practicality, or are concerned about potential reliability issues without specialist inspection.

Competitive Position: The Peugeot RCZ (2009-2015) stands out as a distinctive and entertaining coupe in a competitive segment. Whilst rivals like the Volkswagen Scirocco and Audi TT Mk3 enjoy higher overall CarGurus ratings and better value percentages, the RCZ offers a unique design and engaging driving experience at a more accessible price point. It may not match the premium appeal of an Audi TT or the practicality of a Ford Focus, but for buyers seeking style, character, and driving enjoyment in a coupe, the RCZ remains an attractive and rewarding choice. The ultra-rare RCZ R variant provides genuine sports car thrills for those willing to seek one out.
