Reviewed a 2018 Porsche Boxster 718 on 8 Aug 2022
It was an excellent example of the model. Great body work and interior with lots of extras and very low mileage. Sharper than a BMW Z4 and better looking than an Audi TT.

Porsche Boxster 718 (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exceptionally enjoyable to drive | Four-cylinder engines sound bland |
| Practical enough to use every day | Tyres and brakes will be expensive to replace |
| Roof-down thrills without compromising the driving experience | Lacks the rear seats of a 911 |
Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 718 (2016-present) is an exquisite mid-engined roadster that delivers exceptional driving dynamics and everyday practicality. With a perfectly balanced rear-wheel drive layout, it steers beautifully and offers engaging, rewarding performance in the finest Porsche tradition. The electrically powered roof raises and lowers in nine seconds, whilst the combined 280 litres of luggage space (130-litre frunk and 150-litre boot) rivals most superminis. Comfortable seating with excellent adjustment and decent headroom make it surprisingly versatile for daily use, though storage compartments are limited.
The 2019 refresh introduced naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines in the GTS 4.0 variant, delivering muscular performance and a spine-tingling soundtrack for those willing to stretch their budget. The turbocharged four-cylinder engines, whilst controversial among purists, provide impressive mid-range pace and reasonable fuel economy of around 30mpg. A choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK automatic transmission is available, with numerous dynamic chassis upgrades offering further customisation. Running costs are higher than mainstream sports cars, with premium tyres costing up to £800 and brake replacements around £1,500, though servicing at independent specialists offers savings after warranty expiry.
Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking a thrilling convertible experience, those wanting a sports car suitable for daily commuting, and buyers who appreciate mid-engined handling dynamics and open-top motoring.
Not ideal for: Purists who demand naturally aspirated engines as standard, budget-conscious buyers concerned about premium maintenance costs, or those requiring rear seats and maximum practicality.

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster 718 if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking a thrilling convertible experience, want a sports car suitable for daily commuting, or appreciate mid-engined handling dynamics and open-top motoring.
Consider alternatives if: You're a purist demanding naturally aspirated engines as standard, budget-conscious about premium maintenance costs, or require rear seats and maximum practicality.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 718 stands as a near-peerless roadster in its class, offering the best sports car chassis on sale today combined with the added enjoyment of drop-top motoring. Whilst rivals like the Jaguar F-Type boast higher user ratings and the Audi TT Mk3 offers similar value, the Boxster's mid-engined layout, exceptional driving dynamics, and surprising everyday practicality make it the standout choice for those prioritising driving thrills. The naturally aspirated GTS 4.0 variant elevates the experience further, delivering the soulful engine note that purists demand, though at a premium price point.
