Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) is Porsche's entry-level sports car and one of the most affordable ways to own a Porsche badge. This two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible features a classic flat-six engine that keeps the centre of gravity low, delivering exquisite driving dynamics. Known as the 986 after its development code, it remains one of the best performance-car bargains available, offering crisp steering, beautifully balanced handling, and a rasping engine note that rewards spirited driving. The car is surprisingly practical for a two-seater, with dual boot spaces and reasonable luggage capacity for weekend trips.
Early models came sparsely equipped, with leather seats, traction control, and air-conditioning as expensive options, though equipment levels improved over time. The ride can feel harsh, particularly on the S version, but this is the trade-off for the car's exceptional handling precision. Fuel economy sits mid-table among contemporary roadsters at around 25mpg, but maintenance costs are where expenses mount significantly. Porsche servicing is expensive, though specialist garages offer more affordable alternatives. The good news is the Boxster uses a metal timing chain rather than a rubber belt, reducing long-term maintenance costs. Finding a well-maintained example with a full service history is essential, as neglected Boxsters can become costly to repair.
Best for: Driving enthusiasts seeking affordable access to Porsche ownership, those who prioritise handling and driving pleasure, and buyers with the budget for specialist maintenance.
Not ideal for: Those sensitive to harsh ride quality, buyers seeking lavish equipment levels, or those unwilling to invest in proper maintenance and specialist servicing.

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster if: You're a driving enthusiast seeking affordable Porsche ownership, prioritise handling and driving pleasure, and have the budget for specialist maintenance.
Consider alternatives if: You're sensitive to harsh ride quality, seek lavish equipment levels, or are unwilling to invest in proper maintenance and specialist servicing.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) stands out as the expert's choice among contemporary roadsters, with the highest expert rating and strong user approval. Whilst rivals like the TVR Chimaera and Nissan 370Z offer better value for money, the Boxster delivers superior driving dynamics and handling precision. The BMW Z3/Z4 matches its expert rating but offers less engaging driving. The Boxster's lower percentage of good deals reflects its desirability and the importance of finding a well-maintained example. For those willing to navigate maintenance costs and seek a modern classic with serious driving pleasure, the Boxster represents an exceptional opportunity to own a prestigious Porsche at an accessible price point.

(13 reviews)Pure magic! A super car that is too amazing to be true!
What a great car, the power ratio is insane and handles really well
A superb drive holds to the road like glue and sounds fantastic. Soft top is cool and the PDK transmission is brilliant.
A 22 year young classic Porsche convertible 3.2 S. Custom built. The only bright red Porsche Convertible in this area. Makes other people smile uncontrollably when I let them drive it with the roof down in the sunshine.
Great car, handles well, comfortable, sounds awesome & can really shift
