A superb drive holds to the road like glue and sounds fantastic. Soft top is cool and the PDK transmission is brilliant.

A 22 year young classic Porsche convertible 3.2 S. Custom built. The only bright red Porsche Convertible in this area. Makes other people smile uncontrollably when I let them drive it with the roof down in the sunshine.

Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 986 is Porsche's entry-level sports car: a two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible powered by a classic flat-six engine that keeps its centre of gravity low. Known among enthusiasts as the 986 after its development code, the first-generation Boxster made owning a Porsche far more accessible than ever before. Today, it remains one of the most affordable Porsches to buy second-hand and one of the best performance-car bargains available, though as more people discover it, prices may not stay low for long.
The Boxster is surprisingly practical for a two-seater sports car, with two boots offering sufficient space for a weekly shop or weekend luggage. The driving experience is exceptional—crisp steering, beautifully balanced chassis, and a rasping engine create an immensely satisfying drive. However, early models lacked equipment such as leather seats, traction control, and air-conditioning, which were expensive options. Maintenance costs are steep due to specialist knowledge and expensive parts, though the metal timing chain should last the car's lifetime. With careful purchasing and proper maintenance, the Boxster delivers serious driving pleasure and Porsche cachet on a relatively modest budget.
Best for: Drivers seeking an affordable Porsche with exhilarating performance, those who value crisp, clean driving dynamics, and enthusiasts wanting a modern classic convertible.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising low running costs, those concerned about potentially expensive repairs, or those seeking a car with lavish equipment levels as standard.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

| Porsche Boxster | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 20.4% | 4.2/5 |

| Nissan 370Z | 3/5 | 4.9/5 | 38.4% | 4.1/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster if: You're seeking an affordable Porsche with exhilarating performance, value crisp and clean driving dynamics, or want a modern classic convertible with serious driving pleasure.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise low running costs, are concerned about potentially expensive repairs, or require lavish equipment levels as standard.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 986 is a standout in the affordable sports car market, delivering exceptional driving dynamics and Porsche prestige at a relatively modest price. Whilst the TVR Chimaera offers raw character and the Nissan 370Z provides better value for money, the Boxster's superior build quality, reliability potential, and exquisite driving experience make it the more sensible choice for those willing to invest in proper maintenance. Its metal timing chain and potential for longevity, combined with its timeless appeal, position it as an excellent modern classic investment for discerning drivers.
