Porsche Boxster 718 (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Exceptionally enjoyable to drive	Four-cylinder engines sound bland
Practical enough to use every day	Tyres and brakes will be expensive to replace
Roof-down thrills without compromising the driving experience	Lacks the rear seats of a 911

Quick Summary

The Porsche Boxster 718 (2016-present) is an exceptionally engaging mid-engined two-seater roadster that delivers superb driving dynamics and genuine everyday practicality. With a perfectly balanced chassis, responsive steering, and a choice of turbocharged four-cylinder or naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines, the 718 Boxster offers thrilling performance wrapped in a beautifully crafted package. The electrically powered fabric roof can be raised or lowered in nine seconds at speeds up to 30mph, whilst the combined 280-litre luggage capacity rivals many superminis, making it surprisingly versatile for a sports car.

Whilst purists criticise the four-cylinder engines for their bland sound, the reality is that the 718 Boxster remains a near-peerless roadster that's comfortable and practical in daily use. The 2019 GTS 4.0 variant, featuring a naturally aspirated flat-six engine, delivers muscular performance and a spine-tingling soundtrack for those willing to stretch their budget. Running costs are predictably high for a Porsche, with servicing at official centres costing around £500-£650, whilst tyres and brakes represent significant expenses. However, fuel economy is respectable for a sports car, with most versions achieving around 30mpg.

Best for: Enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating open-top driving experience, those wanting a sports car that's practical enough for daily use, and buyers who appreciate mid-engined handling dynamics.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those sensitive to engine noise, or drivers prioritising low running costs and affordable maintenance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Boxster 718 if: You're an enthusiast seeking an exhilarating open-top driving experience, want a sports car that's practical enough for daily use, or appreciate mid-engined handling dynamics.

Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, sensitive to engine noise, or prioritise low running costs and affordable maintenance.

Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 718 stands as the finest mid-engined roadster on the market, offering superior driving dynamics and everyday practicality compared to its rivals. Whilst the Jaguar F-Type Convertible and BMW Z4 offer better value for money and more generous good/great deal percentages, neither matches the Boxster's exceptional handling and chassis balance. The Audi TT Roadster is more affordable to run but lacks the mid-engined purity and driving engagement of the Porsche. For those willing to invest in a premium sports car experience, the 718 Boxster remains unmatched in its class.
