| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Exquisite to drive | Love-or-loathe looks |

Quick Summary
The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) is Porsche’s accessible, entry-level, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive convertible, powered by a classic flat-six engine. Known as one of the best performance-car bargains, it offers an exhilarating driving experience with crisp steering and a beautifully balanced chassis, making it a true driver's car. Despite being a two-seater, it's surprisingly practical for its class, featuring two boots suitable for a weekly shop or weekend luggage. However, early models lacked comprehensive equipment, and some interior plastics can feel cheap.
While averaging around 25mpg, running costs can be substantial due to expensive Porsche servicing and parts, though a metal timing chain helps with long-term maintenance. Potential buyers must be aware of costly problems if not properly maintained, emphasizing the need for a cherished example with a full service history. Despite these considerations, a well-chosen Boxster offers serious driving pleasure and the prestige of the Porsche badge on a relatively modest budget.
Best for: Drivers seeking an exhilarating, accessible sports car experience, those on a budget for a performance car, and buyers looking for a modern classic with prestigious badge appeal.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising low running costs, extensive standard equipment, or those unwilling to commit to diligent and potentially expensive maintenance.

The Verdict
You should buy the Boxster if: You're seeking an exhilarating and accessible sports car experience, looking for a performance car on a relatively modest budget, or desire a modern classic with the prestige of the Porsche badge.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise low running costs, comprehensive standard equipment, or are unwilling to commit to diligent and potentially expensive maintenance.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Boxster 986 (1997-2005) offers exceptional driving pleasure and premium badge appeal at an increasingly accessible price point, making it a compelling modern classic. While running costs and potential maintenance issues can be significant, careful purchasing and maintenance can mitigate these. It stands out for its pure driving dynamics and mid-engine layout, differentiating it from rivals like the TVR Chimaera, which offers raw power, or the Nissan 370Z, which is newer but potentially less engaging for some purists. Its blend of performance and prestige at its price makes it a unique and highly desirable proposition.

(13 reviews)Pure magic! A super car that is too amazing to be true!
What a great car, the power ratio is insane and handles really well
A superb drive holds to the road like glue and sounds fantastic. Soft top is cool and the PDK transmission is brilliant.
A 22 year young classic Porsche convertible 3.2 S. Custom built. The only bright red Porsche Convertible in this area. Makes other people smile uncontrollably when I let them drive it with the roof down in the sunshine.
Great car, handles well, comfortable, sounds awesome & can really shift
