Porsche Cayenne (2011-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very agile for such a big car	Ride quality suffers on big alloys
Spacious and luxurious cabin	Turbo S is shockingly thirsty
Excels on both motorways and country roads	No seven-seat version

Quick Summary

The Porsche Cayenne (2011-2017), the second-generation model, refined the formula established by its predecessor. With sharpened styling, a luxurious interior rivalling any premium car, and enhanced driving dynamics, the Cayenne remains four-wheel drive whilst shedding unnecessary off-road hardware. A mid-life refresh in 2014 introduced subtle visual tweaks and mechanical refinements, most notably the Cayenne S's adoption of a downsized turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 replacing the 4.8-litre V8. The range encompasses multiple engine options: petrol V6 and V8 variants, turbocharged diesel engines, and hybrid models, ensuring authentic Porsche performance across all specifications.

What truly distinguishes the Cayenne is its remarkable agility despite its substantial size and weight. On twisting roads, it handles with the poise and precision of a car half its dimensions, delivering authentic Porsche performance and satisfaction. The cabin is exceptionally spacious with comfortable front and rear seating, a cavernous 670-litre boot expanding to 1,728 litres with seats folded, and a powered tailgate for convenience. However, running costs are substantial: fuel economy ranges from mid-20s mpg for petrol models to 41mpg for diesels, whilst maintenance, tyres, and insurance are premium-priced. A pre-purchase inspection by an independent Porsche specialist is strongly recommended to identify potential issues early.

Best for: Drivers seeking a premium SUV combining high performance with luxury, those prioritising driving dynamics and handling, and families requiring spacious, comfortable long-distance cruising.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those requiring seven seats, or drivers unwilling to invest in specialist pre-purchase inspections and maintenance costs.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Cayenne if: You prioritise driving dynamics and handling in a premium SUV, seek a spacious and luxurious cabin, or desire authentic Porsche performance with exceptional agility.

Consider alternatives if: You require seven seats, are budget-conscious regarding running costs, or prefer to avoid specialist maintenance expenses.

Competitive Position: The Porsche Cayenne (2011-2017) stands as the benchmark premium SUV, delivering a compelling blend of high performance, supreme driving pleasure, and cosseting luxury. Whilst rivals like the Audi Q7 offer slightly higher overall ratings and the Range Rover Sport provides alternative prestige, the Cayenne's unmatched agility and handling prowess distinguish it as the driver's choice. Its spacious cabin, powerful engine options, and exceptional motorway and country road capability make it the ideal premium SUV for those prioritising performance and refinement. However, substantial running costs and the necessity of specialist maintenance mean careful selection and pre-purchase inspection are essential investments.
