Porsche Cayenne (2018-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Brilliant to drive | Divisive styling |

Quick Summary
The Porsche Cayenne (2018-present), the third-generation model, is an upmarket high-performance SUV that combines space and practicality with genuine driving thrills. Unveiled in August 2017, it features a new platform, turbocharged V6 engines, modern styling, and improved efficiency—up to 65kg lighter than its predecessor despite a larger footprint. The range includes the standard Cayenne with a 335bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, the Cayenne S with a 435bhp twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6, and performance variants including the GTS, Turbo, and E-Hybrid models. The sleeker Cayenne Coupé, introduced in 2019, rivals the BMW X6 and Range Rover Velar, whilst the track-focused GT model offers exceptional driving dynamics for keen drivers.
Despite its substantial size and weight, the Cayenne delivers impressive performance—the entry-level model accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds, whilst the Turbo S E-Hybrid achieves this in just 3.8 seconds. The car excels in handling, with quick steering, strong grip, and air suspension that keeps body roll minimal. It's equally at home as a refined executive express or tackling off-road terrain. The boot offers 770 litres of space (1,710 litres with rear seats folded), though hybrid models sacrifice some capacity. Running costs are substantial, with the standard Cayenne averaging 24.1mpg and emitting 289g/km CO2, though the E-Hybrid variant offers up to 91.1mpg and 71g/km emissions. Servicing is required every 20,000 miles or two years, with strong residual values helping offset ownership costs.
Best for: Buyers seeking an upmarket, high-performance SUV that combines driving excitement with family practicality, and those willing to invest in premium ownership costs for exceptional capability.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers or those prioritising fuel economy and low running costs, and drivers who prefer more compact, agile SUVs.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porsche Cayenne | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.5% | 4.3/5 |
| BMW X5 | 5/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.5/5 |
| Range Rover Sport | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLE | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 30.2% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Cayenne if: You seek an upmarket, high-performance SUV combining driving excitement with family practicality, and are willing to invest in premium ownership costs for exceptional capability.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise fuel economy and low running costs, or prefer more compact and agile SUVs over large, heavyweight models.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Cayenne (2018-present) is a highly talented upmarket SUV that excels in driving dynamics, performance, and practicality. Whilst the BMW X5 edges ahead with a higher expert rating and more competitive pricing, the Cayenne's superior handling and driving engagement make it the choice for enthusiasts. The Range Rover Sport and Mercedes-Benz GLE offer compelling alternatives, but the Porsche's breadth of range—from the efficient E-Hybrid to the track-focused GT—ensures there's a variant for virtually every requirement. Its main drawback remains the substantial running costs and divisive styling, though strong residual values provide some compensation.

4.5 Overall rating
(10 reviews)Drives well, good fuel economy for the weight considering it’s petrol powered. Rather rapid, very well built.
The only thing I can fault on this amazing machine is the Bluetooth media player occasionally doesnt connect but it just gives you another reason to wind down the windows and listen to the symphony produced by Porsches amazing 4.8 GTS V8
comfortable and luxurious interior, build quality and surprisingly good fuel consumption.
A bit pricey considering the wear & tear of the car.
Comfortable always great spec and power where needed as you would expect from porche
