Porsche Macan Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Superbly made cabin | Tight on rear-seat space |
| Performance and Porsche badge kudos | You can buy more practical SUVs for less |
| Lovely driving dynamics across the board | Diesel engine option was dropped in 2018 |
Quick Summary
The Porsche Macan is a compact SUV that delivers superlative driving dynamics and a superbly crafted interior. Available in four petrol variants—the base Macan and T with a 261bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, and the S and GTS with a 375bhp and 434bhp 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 respectively—every version feels engaging and responsive. The Macan T and GTS benefit from lowered, stiffened suspension for enhanced agility, whilst the GTS adds air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management for even greater dynamic potential. All models feature all-wheel drive, a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox and class-leading roadholding that makes this SUV genuinely thrilling to drive.
Practicality is respectable rather than exceptional, with a 458-litre boot expanding to 1,503 litres with rear seats folded. Rear legroom is snug, making it more suited to four occupants than five. The cabin is beautifully finished with quality materials throughout, and post-2021 facelifted models feature an excellent 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. Running costs are significant—Porsche servicing is expensive and fuel economy ranges from 24.1 to 27.9mpg depending on the model. However, residual values remain strong, and the Macan's timeless design ensures it remains desirable in the used market.
Best for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling and premium quality, those seeking a performance SUV with genuine Porsche credentials, and buyers willing to sacrifice some practicality for driving pleasure.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those needing maximum rear-seat space or practicality, or drivers seeking the lowest running costs in the SUV segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Porsche Macan | 4/5 | 4.8/5 | 33.7% | 4.4/5 |
| BMW X3 | 5/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.0% | 4.5/5 |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class | 4/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.5% | 4.4/5 |
| Audi Q5 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 32.3% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Macan if: You prioritise engaging handling and premium quality, seek a performance SUV with genuine Porsche credentials, or are willing to sacrifice some practicality for driving pleasure.
Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, need maximum rear-seat space or practicality, or require the lowest running costs in the SUV segment.
Competitive Position: The Porsche Macan stands apart in the compact SUV market through its exceptional driving dynamics and beautifully crafted interior. Whilst the BMW X3 offers a higher expert rating and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class achieves marginally better value scores, the Macan's engaging handling and Porsche badge appeal make it uniquely compelling for drivers who prioritise driving pleasure. The Audi Q5, though practical and competent, lacks the Macan's sporting character. For those willing to invest in premium running costs, the Macan delivers a genuinely thrilling SUV experience that few rivals can match.

4.8 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Great SUV , well built drives brilliantly and in my opinion the best SUV on the road
Excellent car all the luxury I’ve grown to expect in my new car Diesel engine too so economical also
An SUV that drives like a sports car, brilliant Road holding for such a large car.
Holds it value better than any other SUV , stylish and lots of guts . Expense !!
The car is older than i would like, it has many additional features that I wanted, The mileage is reasonable. The long term use will prove whether it is worth paying so much for a Porsche.
