Porsche Macan Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Superbly made cabin	Tight on rear-seat space
Performance and Porsche badge kudos	You can buy more practical SUVs for less
Lovely driving dynamics across the board	Diesel engine option was dropped in 2018

Quick Summary

The Porsche Macan is a compact SUV that delivers class-leading driving dynamics and a superbly crafted interior. Available in four petrol variants—the base Macan, Macan T, Macan S, and Macan GTS—each offers impressive performance paired with Porsche's engineering excellence. The entry-level Macan and T use a responsive 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 261bhp, whilst the S and GTS employ a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 with 375bhp and 434bhp respectively. All models feature all-wheel drive, a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox, and suspension tuned for engaging handling that outperforms rivals in terms of responsiveness and precision.

Practicality is adequate rather than exceptional, with a 458-litre boot expanding to 1,503 litres with rear seats folded. Rear legroom is snug, making it better suited as a four-seater, though the cabin quality is first-class throughout. The Macan excels on winding roads, offering a thrilling yet refined driving experience, whilst remaining composed on motorways. Fuel economy ranges from 24.1 to 27.9mpg depending on the model, and servicing intervals occur every two years or 20,000 miles. Residual values remain strong, and the 2021 facelift brought an improved 10.9-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Best for: Drivers prioritising engaging handling and premium quality, those seeking performance credentials with Porsche badge appeal, and buyers willing to trade some practicality for driving enjoyment.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear-seat space, buyers seeking the most practical compact SUV, or those wanting diesel engine options.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Macan if: You prioritise engaging handling and premium quality, seek performance credentials with Porsche badge appeal, or are willing to trade some practicality for driving enjoyment.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear-seat space, seek the most practical compact SUV, or want diesel engine options.

Competitive Position: The Porsche Macan stands out in the compact premium SUV segment for its exceptional driving dynamics and superbly crafted interior. Whilst rivals like the Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offer greater practicality and the BMW X3 delivers impressive versatility, the Macan's performance credentials and handling prowess are unmatched at this price point. Only the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio comes close for driving engagement, but it cannot match the Porsche's interior quality or residual values. The Macan remains the driver's choice for those prioritising thrilling road manners over maximum space, making it an excellent investment for enthusiasts seeking a premium SUV with genuine sporting intent.
