Tesla Model 3 (2018-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Affordable to buy for a premium electric car	A little cramped in the back and boot
Brilliant Tesla Supercharger network	No head-up display
Even better to drive since 2024 update	Latest version lacks physical stalks for major driving controls

Quick Summary

The Tesla Model 3 (2018-present) is a premium electric saloon that rivals the BMW 3 Series and competes with the Polestar 2, BMW i4, and Hyundai Ioniq 6. The 2024 update significantly improved the official WLTP driving range to between 344 and 421 miles, along with suspension tweaks that enhanced both handling and ride comfort. The minimalist interior features a 15-inch touchscreen controlling most functions, with no traditional stalks or dials. Both Rear-Wheel Drive and Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive models are available, with the latter achieving 62mph in just 4.2 seconds.

The Model 3 is one of the cheapest premium electric cars to buy and run, with access to Tesla's excellent Supercharger network enabling rapid charging. It benefits from free Vehicle Excise Duty and London Congestion Zone entry until the end of 2025. However, rear passenger space and boot capacity are somewhat limited compared to traditional saloons, and insurance costs are high due to its insurance group rating. The lack of physical controls may prove off-putting for some drivers, though the overall ownership experience remains compelling for those prioritising efficiency and advanced semi-autonomous driving aids.

Best for: Budget-conscious premium electric car buyers, those seeking excellent charging infrastructure, company car users, and drivers who value efficiency and advanced technology.

Not ideal for: Drivers requiring maximum rear passenger or boot space, those preferring traditional physical controls, or buyers seeking the most engaging driving dynamics.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Model 3 if: You're seeking an affordable premium electric car, value access to an excellent charging network, prioritise efficiency and low running costs, or want advanced semi-autonomous driving aids.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear passenger or boot space, prefer traditional physical controls, or seek the most engaging driving dynamics available in the premium electric segment.

Competitive Position: The Tesla Model 3 is one of the very best premium electric cars available, offering exceptional value, impressive range, and access to the unrivalled Supercharger network. Whilst the BMW i4 delivers more engaging driving dynamics and the Polestar 2 offers better rear space with a hatchback boot, the Model 3 remains the most affordable option and delivers outstanding efficiency. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 provides excellent user satisfaction, but the Model 3's superior charging infrastructure and lower purchase price make it a compelling choice for most buyers. The 2024 update has further strengthened its position, making it an excellent choice whether buying new or used.
