Toyota Hilux (2016-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Extremely capable off road	The 2.4-litre engine is lethargic compared with the latest 2.8
Deserved reputation for toughness and durability	You get a longer warranty with a SsangYong Musso
Spacious load bed and high towing capacity	Steering feels vague

Quick Summary

The Toyota Hilux (2016-present) is now in its eighth generation and has cemented its reputation as an ultra-tough workhorse capable of tackling serious terrain. Available in Single Cab, Extra Cab, and Double Cab configurations, it combines utilitarian roots with modern comforts and cutting-edge technology. The Double Cab is the most car-like, offering plenty of space for rear passengers, numerous storage solutions, and a commanding driving position. Most models are four-wheel drive with low-range capability, though two-wheel drive options exist. The Hilux sits firmly in the middle of the pick-up market, offering a genuine balance between working vehicle practicality and lifestyle appeal.

On the road, the Hilux drives reasonably well for a pick-up, though it's unsophisticated compared to SUVs. The ride can be firm and bouncy, particularly at the rear, and body roll through corners is pronounced with vague steering. However, off-road performance is excellent, with impressive wading depth, approach and departure angles, and a one-tonne payload capacity. The 2.4-litre diesel engine is agricultural and noisy, but the 2.8-litre introduced in 2020 offers a considerable improvement with 201bhp. Fuel economy ranges from 30mpg to 33.2mpg depending on engine and transmission. As a light commercial vehicle, it benefits from flat-rate company car tax and vehicle excise duty, though insurance premiums may be higher. Fixed-price servicing is available through Toyota.

Best for: Buyers seeking a capable working truck with genuine off-road ability, those benefiting from commercial vehicle tax advantages, and drivers wanting a tough, reliable vehicle with high towing capacity and spacious load bed.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising car-like handling and ride comfort, drivers seeking premium interior quality, or buyers wanting the smoothest on-road experience in the pick-up segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Hilux if: You need a capable working truck with genuine off-road ability, you benefit from commercial vehicle tax advantages, or you want a tough, reliable vehicle with high towing capacity and spacious load bed.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise car-like handling and ride comfort, seek premium interior quality, or want the smoothest on-road experience in the pick-up segment.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Hilux (2016-present) remains an excellent all-rounder in the pick-up truck market, offering bulletproof reliability and exceptional off-road performance. Whilst some rivals offer nicer interiors and better handling characteristics, the Hilux's reputation for toughness and durability is well-deserved. The Ford Ranger edges ahead with superior user ratings and slightly better value, whilst the Volkswagen Amarok offers a more premium experience. However, the Hilux should remain on any shortlist for those seeking a genuine working truck with modern comforts and proven capability.
