Toyota Hilux (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | The 2.4-litre engine is lethargic compared with the latest 2.8 |
| Deserved reputation for toughness and durability | You get a longer warranty with a SsangYong Musso |
| Spacious load bed and high towing capacity | Steering feels vague |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Hilux (2016-present) is an iconic, ultra-tough pick-up truck renowned for its durability and off-road capability. Now in its eighth generation, it has evolved from a pure workhorse to a lifestyle vehicle, with various body styles and trim levels offering car-like comfort and technology. While maintaining its utilitarian roots, the Hilux is engineered for serious off-road terrain, with most models featuring four-wheel drive and a low-range mode.
On-road, the Hilux drives reasonably well for a pick-up, though its ride can be firm and bouncy due to its robust suspension designed for heavy loads. The initial 2.4-litre diesel engine is noisy, but the later 2.8-litre (from mid-2020) offers a significant improvement in power and efficiency, though it's still noisy. Running costs are competitive for its class, with company car tax benefits and fixed-price servicing, though insurance can be higher. It's a highly capable vehicle that balances ruggedness with modern features.
Best for: Buyers needing an ultra-tough, reliable workhorse, those frequently driving off-road, or company car drivers seeking tax benefits.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising car-like ride comfort and handling, or buyers sensitive to engine and wind noise at higher speeds.

The Verdict
You should buy the Hilux if: You need an ultra-tough, reliable workhorse, frequently drive off-road, or are a company car driver seeking tax benefits.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise car-like ride comfort and handling, or are sensitive to engine and wind noise at higher speeds.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Hilux (2016-present) stands as a formidable contender in the pick-up truck market, highly valued for its legendary reliability, exceptional off-road capabilities, and strong towing capacity. While some rivals like the Ford Ranger might offer a smoother ride or the Volkswagen Amarok a more premium interior, the Hilux excels as a robust and versatile all-rounder. Its competitive running costs for commercial users and its balance of utilitarian function with modern amenities make it a compelling choice for those requiring a genuinely capable vehicle that won't let them down.
Toyota Hi-Lux Review

4.3 Overall rating
(21 reviews)Always liked the Hilux. Feel very safe. Very easy to drive, cover ground well. Extra cab gives you a extra room with out feeling enormously to big to park
Lovely looking truck inside and out apart from underneath. This truck has rust problems underneath rear chassis and bed the rust has just been painted over and tried to be hidden. Paint is all peeling and rust is obvious when you look underneath the back end.
Great car with everything you can need for a private and commercial pick up
With one Hilux already in the stable, we have been searching for a second, to take on the duties of going off road on hilly Exmoor, and to pull a heavy stockbox full of sheep. The Hilux is tough, reliable and very good too when the tarmac runs out
This car is not about value, it’s about longevity and just knowing there is nothing better available.
