Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap as a used buy | Drab interior |
| Lots of standard equipment | Many rivals are more practical |
| Later diesel engines were punchy | Not that great on the road |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) arrived as a value-for-money SUV, with entry-level models initially priced under £20,000. It offered a 2.4-litre petrol and a more popular 2.0 CDTi diesel. A 2010 facelift introduced improved 2.2-litre CDTi diesel engines (161bhp or 181bhp) and suspension revisions to address its "wobbly handling," though it still lagged behind rivals like the Ford Kuga in driving enjoyment. The petrol engine was discontinued after the facelift.
Despite its size, the Antara's practicality is middling, with a drab interior and a 420-litre boot that expands to 1,420 litres with seats folded. Running costs are mixed; while better than large SUVs, it's thirstier than comparable compact SUVs, with real-world diesel economy around 27-29mpg for early models, improving to ~36mpg for later 2.2 CDTi FWD versions. VED is steep due to high emissions. However, it boasts generous standard equipment, including stability control, air-con, and 4WD on basic E models, making it an affordable used buy.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, those seeking a well-equipped five-seat SUV, or buyers who prioritise lots of standard features for the price.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising strong driving dynamics, premium interior quality, class-leading practicality (boot space or 7-seater option), or low running costs compared to more modern rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vauxhall Antara | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 31.9% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Kuga | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 32.8% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota RAV4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 35.3% | 4.3/5 |
| Honda CR-V | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 31.7% | 4.4/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Antara if: You're on a budget, seeking a well-equipped five-seat SUV, or prioritise lots of standard features for the price.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise strong driving dynamics, premium interior quality, class-leading practicality, or low running costs compared to more modern rivals.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) offers undeniable value as a used SUV, providing generous standard equipment for its price point. While its driving dynamics, interior quality, and practicality fall short compared to rivals like the Ford Kuga, Honda CR-V, or Toyota RAV4, its affordability makes it a consideration for budget-conscious buyers seeking a straightforward five-seat SUV. However, be mindful of its potentially higher running costs and reliability concerns.

4.4 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Lovely comfortable ride, spacious interior and great ride height, good sized boot. Not impressed with the road tax bracket.
The car is great without faults and very neat. The price matches the value
Very good and reliable car and is good value. I would think it compares very favourable with other cars of the same type
Looks excellent, I would go for the SE Nav 163 and try to find one with a sunroof. I would compare it to the Ford Kuga in lots of ways. The Antara is probably a better tow car though.
Great big comfy car, plenty room in it, family car
