Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Cheap as a used buy	Drab interior
Lots of standard equipment	Many rivals are more practical
Later diesel engines were punchy	Not that great on the road

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) is an affordable five-seat SUV that majored on value when it arrived in UK showrooms. Entry-level models started at less than £20,000, offering excellent value for an SUV. Even basic E-specification models came well equipped with stability control, four-wheel drive, hill descent control, air-conditioning, front fog lights, roof rails, and a CD player. The 2010 facelift brought a more prominent Griffin logo, improved interior finish, and additional safety kit. However, the Antara struggles with practicality compared to rivals, offering only 420 litres of boot space with rear seats upright and 1,420 litres when folded.

The diesel engines are the pick of the range, with the later 2.2 CDTi units delivering strong mid-range pull and improved efficiency. The 2.2 CDTi manual front-wheel drive version achieved official economy of 46.3mpg, though expect around 36mpg in real-world driving. The petrol engine is thirsty, averaging mid-20s mpg in everyday driving. Whilst the Antara offers good value as a used buy, it is bland to drive, lacks the practicality of rivals like the Honda CR-V, and has a reputation for reliability concerns. Running costs are middling at best for an SUV of this size, with high Vehicle Excise Duty bills due to emissions levels.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable five-seat SUV with plenty of standard equipment and those downsizing from larger vehicles.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising driving enjoyment, practicality, reliability, or low running costs, or those wanting a spacious boot for an SUV of this size.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Antara if: You're on a tight budget seeking an affordable five-seat SUV with plenty of standard equipment and don't prioritise driving dynamics or practicality.

Consider alternatives if: You value driving enjoyment, practicality, reliability, low running costs, or a spacious boot, or you want an SUV you can depend on long-term.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) is the most affordable option in this SUV segment, making it attractive to budget-conscious buyers. However, it is outclassed by rivals in most areas. The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 offer superior practicality, reliability, and driving experience, whilst the Ford Kuga is more enjoyable on the road. The Antara's main strength is its low purchase price and generous standard equipment, but these advantages are offset by its bland driving experience, limited boot space, drab interior, and reliability concerns. For most buyers, investing slightly more in a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 represents better long-term value.
