Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap as a used buy | Drab interior |
| Lots of standard equipment | Many rivals are more practical |
| Later diesel engines were punchy | Not that great on the road |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) is an affordable five-seat SUV that majored on value when it arrived in UK showrooms. Entry-level models started at less than £20,000, offering excellent value for money. Even basic E specification models came well equipped with stability control, four-wheel drive, hill descent control, air-conditioning, and roof rails. The 2010 facelift brought a more prominent grille, improved interior finish, and updated safety features, whilst the later 2.2-litre CDTi diesel engines delivered stronger performance than earlier units.
However, the Antara has notable weaknesses. The interior feels cheap, boot space is limited at 420 litres with rear seats upright, and it's not particularly enjoyable to drive compared to rivals like the Ford Kuga or Mazda CX-5. Running costs are middling for an SUV of this size, with the petrol engine particularly thirsty. Reliability is a concern, and many competitors offer better practicality and driving dynamics. As a used buy, the Antara represents good value, but there are stronger alternatives available.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable five-seat SUV with plenty of standard equipment, and those downsizing from larger vehicles.
Not ideal for: Drivers prioritising driving enjoyment, practicality, reliability, or premium interior quality, or those wanting better fuel economy than comparable rivals.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vauxhall Antara | 3/5 | 4.3/5 | 38.5% | 4.0/5 |

| Toyota RAV4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 31.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Honda CR-V Mk4 | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 30.1% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Antara if: You're on a tight budget, seeking an affordable five-seat SUV with plenty of standard equipment, or downsizing from a larger vehicle.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving enjoyment, practicality, reliability, or premium interior quality, or require better fuel economy than comparable rivals.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) is an affordable entry point to SUV ownership, offering excellent value and generous standard equipment. However, it falls short against stronger rivals in key areas. The Ford Kuga is more enjoyable to drive, whilst the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V offer superior reliability, practicality, and overall quality. For budget-conscious buyers willing to compromise on driving dynamics and interior ambience, the Antara represents reasonable value. For those prioritising dependability and driving pleasure, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 make considerably more sense.

What people say
Lovely comfortable ride, spacious interior and great ride height, good sized boot. Not impressed with the road tax bracket.
The car is great without faults and very neat. The price matches the value
Very good and reliable car and is good value. I would think it compares very favourable with other cars of the same type
Looks excellent, I would go for the SE Nav 163 and try to find one with a sunroof. I would compare it to the Ford Kuga in lots of ways. The Antara is probably a better tow car though.
Great big comfy car, plenty room in it, family car
