Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap as a used buy | Drab interior |
| Lots of standard equipment | Many rivals are more practical |
| Later diesel engines were punchy | Not that great on the road |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) is an affordable five-seat SUV that majored on value when it arrived in UK showrooms. Entry-level models started at less than £20,000, offering excellent value for an SUV. Even basic E-specification models came well-equipped with stability control, four-wheel drive, hill descent control, air-conditioning, and roof rails. The 2010 facelift brought a refreshed grille, improved interior finish, and more safety kit, whilst the introduction of 2.2-litre diesel engines delivered stronger performance and better efficiency than earlier models.
However, the Antara has notable weaknesses. The interior feels cheap, boot space is limited at 420 litres with rear seats upright, and it's not particularly practical for its size. From the driver's seat, it's bland and uninspiring, with handling that's wobbly even after suspension revisions. Running costs are middling for an SUV of this era, with the petrol particularly thirsty. Reliability is a concern, and rivals like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 offer superior practicality, driving dynamics, and dependability. As a used buy, the Antara represents good value, but better alternatives exist in the compact SUV segment.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable five-seat SUV with plenty of standard equipment and low purchase prices.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising driving enjoyment, practicality, reliability, or fuel efficiency, or buyers wanting a spacious interior and large boot.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vauxhall Antara | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 36.2% | 4.0/5 |
| Ford Kuga | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.2% | 4.3/5 |
| Toyota RAV4 | 4/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.5% | 4.3/5 |
| Honda CR-V Mk4 | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 30.4% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Antara if: You're seeking an affordable five-seat SUV with plenty of standard equipment and a low purchase price.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise driving enjoyment, practicality, reliability, fuel efficiency, or require a spacious interior and large boot.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) is an affordable entry point to SUV ownership, offering excellent value and generous standard equipment. However, it falls short against key rivals in nearly every other respect. The Ford Kuga is more enjoyable to drive, whilst the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 deliver superior practicality, reliability, and driving dynamics. For budget-conscious buyers willing to compromise on driving experience and practicality, the Antara represents decent value. However, if you can stretch your budget slightly, the alternatives offer significantly better all-round capability and dependability.

What people say
The car is great without faults and very neat. The price matches the value
Very good and reliable car and is good value. I would think it compares very favourable with other cars of the same type
Lovely comfortable ride, spacious interior and great ride height, good sized boot. Not impressed with the road tax bracket.
Looks excellent, I would go for the SE Nav 163 and try to find one with a sunroof. I would compare it to the Ford Kuga in lots of ways. The Antara is probably a better tow car though.
Great big comfy car, plenty room in it, family car
