Vauxhall Crossland X (2017-2020) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Lots of equipment, whichever trim you choose	Not very exciting to drive
Well priced used examples	Some reliability issues
Spacious inside for a relatively small car	The non-turbo 1.2-litre model is slow

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Crossland X (2017-2020) is a compact crossover SUV designed for families seeking a modern, spacious alternative to traditional MPVs. Introduced in 2017, it replaces the Meriva with a contemporary body style and improved aesthetics. The interior is remarkably spacious for its size, offering generous headroom and legroom, with some models featuring sliding rear seats to balance passenger comfort and boot capacity. With up to 520 litres of boot space and a movable boot floor on higher-end models, it provides excellent practicality for family use. The touchscreen infotainment system includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity across the range.

On the road, the Crossland X balances agility with comfort, featuring suspension that absorbs poor road surfaces whilst remaining composed through corners. The light steering aids manoeuvrability in town, though it can feel vague at times. Diesel models offer the best fuel economy, with newer 1.5-litre engines achieving up to 61.4mpg, whilst turbocharged petrols provide better efficiency than their non-turbo counterparts. With no model exceeding £40,000 when new, Vehicle Excise Duty is charged at a flat rate, and insurance groups range from eight to 19, making premiums very affordable. Servicing is due annually or every 16,000 miles, with costs between £205 and £435.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, well-equipped compact SUV with modern styling, budget-conscious buyers looking for good value, and those prioritising practicality over driving excitement.

Not ideal for: Drivers seeking an engaging driving experience, buyers concerned about reliability, or those requiring a non-turbo petrol engine with adequate performance.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Crossland X if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped compact SUV with modern styling, looking for good value as a used car, or prioritising practicality for family use.

Consider alternatives if: You want an engaging driving experience, are concerned about reliability, or require a non-turbo petrol engine with adequate performance.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Crossland X (2017-2020) is a competitive option in the compact crossover segment, offering excellent value and practicality. Whilst rivals like the Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008 score slightly higher with experts, the Crossland X delivers impressive user satisfaction and strong equipment levels across all trim variants. Its spacious interior and well-priced used examples make it an attractive proposition for budget-conscious families. However, potential reliability concerns warrant thorough inspection before purchase, and those seeking superior driving dynamics may prefer the Renault Captur or Peugeot 2008.
