Vauxhall Grandland X (2017-2021) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very well equipped	Doesn't excel in any one area
Pleasant to drive	Many rivals are more interesting inside and out
Inoffensive styling	Slight question marks over reliability

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Grandland X (2017-2021) is a spacious and well-equipped mid-size SUV that shares its platform with the Peugeot 3008. It offers a practical interior with a flat floor, generous rear legroom, and a 514-litre boot (1,652 litres with seats folded). The cabin is well laid out with intuitive controls and good-quality materials, though it lacks the distinctive character of some rivals. Steering is accurate and composed, with decent body control and comfortable ride quality, though it doesn't match the sharpness of the Seat Ateca or the refinement of premium competitors.

The engine range is straightforward, comprising a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.5-litre diesel, and petrol-electric hybrid options. The 1.2 petrol achieves around 42.8-45.6mpg officially, whilst the 1.5 diesel delivers approximately 53.3-54.3mpg. Hybrid versions offer impressive official figures but require predominantly electric driving to achieve real-world savings. Even the base SE Premium trim includes cruise control, climate control, rear parking sensors, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Heavy initial depreciation makes the Grandland X an attractive used buy, with long service intervals and competitive fixed-price servicing available.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped SUV with low running costs and practical everyday usability.

Not ideal for: Those prioritising distinctive styling, engaging driving dynamics, or premium interior ambience, or buyers concerned about reliability records.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Grandland X if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped SUV with practical everyday usability and attractive used-car pricing due to heavy depreciation.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise distinctive styling, engaging driving dynamics, premium interior ambience, or have concerns about reliability records.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Grandland X (2017-2021) occupies a middle ground in the mid-size SUV market. Whilst it doesn't excel in any particular area, it offers solid all-round capability with excellent equipment levels and practicality. The Skoda Karoq surpasses it with superior design and expert ratings, whilst the Seat Ateca provides sharper handling and the Nissan Qashqai offers better value and all-round appeal. However, the Grandland X's heavy depreciation makes it an excellent used-car bargain for budget-conscious buyers prioritising space and equipment over distinctive character or dynamic performance.
