Volkswagen ID.3 (2020-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Futuristic looks meet family-friendly space | Not as energy-efficient as some rivals |
| Good range of battery and engine options | Not quite as premium-feeling as you'd hope |
| Well equipped | Infotainment system glitchy and flawed |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen ID.3 (2020-present) is Volkswagen's answer to the family electric hatchback, offering a bespoke platform and design language rather than simply electrifying the Golf. Available with 58kWh and 77kWh batteries (post-facelift), it delivers ranges up to 347 miles and features a single rear-wheel-drive electric motor producing 201bhp. The spacious cabin offers more rear legroom than the Golf, a 385-litre boot, and an excellent driving position with broad seat adjustment. Charging times vary by battery size and charger type, with rapid charging delivering a 100-mile top-up in 15–30 minutes via the standard CCS port.
The ID.3 delivers a calm, predictable, and surefooted driving experience with light, accurate steering and a low centre of gravity for precise cornering. Refinement is excellent thanks to the near-silent electric motor, though the relatively stiff suspension can feel firm at low speeds. Running costs are competitive, with electricity typically costing about half that of petrol fuel, and servicing intervals are longer than most rivals. However, efficiency lags behind some competitors at around 3.1 miles/kWh, the interior features some cheaper-feeling plastics, and the infotainment system requires scrolling through multiple menus. As a well-rounded family car, the ID.3 sets a high standard for the future, though it's not without rivals that excel in specific areas.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, well-equipped electric hatchback with futuristic styling, good range options, and low running costs, particularly those with access to home charging.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum energy efficiency, a premium interior feel throughout, or an intuitive infotainment system, or those requiring five seats in the largest battery variant.

The Verdict
You should buy the ID.3 if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped electric hatchback with futuristic styling, good range options, and low running costs, particularly with access to home charging.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum energy efficiency, a premium interior throughout, an intuitive infotainment system, or require five seats in the largest battery variant.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID.3 (2020-present) is a strong contender in the electric family hatchback market, offering excellent space, good range options, and comprehensive equipment. Whilst the Kia Niro EV edges ahead with superior efficiency and a more premium feel, and the MG4 offers exceptional user satisfaction at a lower price point, the ID.3 remains a well-rounded proposition. Its futuristic design, practical interior, and competitive running costs make it an appealing choice for families transitioning to electric motoring, though potential buyers should be aware of its infotainment limitations and efficiency figures that lag behind some rivals.

4.4 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Its like a well built MG4, each is rear wheel drive with similar power output. In comparasions the MG4 always wins on price. Wait a couple years and its easy to find a very reasonably priced VW
All features are good and value for money Looking at the MG RANGE at present and may be Toyota as well but its all going to Depend on hour to charge at the motors ways and other charge points
I like the car and it has some good features however what is stopping me from buying one at the moment is the infotainment system it can be a bit slow to start and I hear owners are having problems with the over the air updates.
