Volkswagen ID.3 (2020-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Futuristic looks meet family-friendly space	Not as energy-efficient as some rivals
Good range of battery and engine options	Not quite as premium-feeling as you'd hope
Well equipped	Infotainment system glitchy and flawed

Quick Summary

The Volkswagen ID.3 (2020-present) is a well-rounded family electric hatchback that combines futuristic design with practical family-friendly space. Built on a bespoke platform, it offers a choice of battery sizes: the 58kWh provides up to 266 miles of range, whilst the 77kWh delivers up to 347 miles. The rear-wheel-drive layout maximises interior space, with a spacious 385-litre boot and excellent rear legroom. All models feature a single 201bhp electric motor, delivering calm, predictable driving with a tight turning circle and smooth ride quality ideal for town and motorway driving.

The ID.3 is well-equipped with LED headlamps, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera and a TFT instrument cluster. Charging times vary by battery size and charger type, with rapid charging delivering a 100-mile top-up in 15–30 minutes. Running costs are competitive, especially with affordable home electricity tariffs, and servicing intervals are longer than most rivals. However, real-world efficiency of around 3.1 miles/kWh falls short of some competitors, and the touchscreen infotainment system requires improvement. The 2023 facelift introduced revised trim levels and enhanced charging capabilities.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, well-equipped electric hatchback with futuristic styling, practical storage, and low running costs, particularly those with access to home charging.

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum energy efficiency, premium interior materials, or intuitive infotainment systems, or those requiring five seats in the largest battery variant.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the ID.3 if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped electric hatchback with futuristic styling, practical storage, and low running costs, particularly with access to home charging.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum energy efficiency, premium interior materials, intuitive infotainment systems, or require five seats in the largest battery variant.

Competitive Position: The Volkswagen ID.3 is a solid contender in the family electric hatchback market, offering excellent space, futuristic design, and comprehensive equipment. Whilst the Kia Niro EV edges ahead with superior ratings and efficiency, and the Jeep Avenger and MG4 offer competitive value, the ID.3 remains a well-rounded choice. Its main drawbacks—moderate efficiency and infotainment limitations—are offset by its spacious interior, strong build quality, and practical battery options. For families prioritising design and space over outright efficiency, the ID.3 represents a compelling proposition in the growing electric family car segment.
