Volkswagen Scirocco (2008-2017) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Loads of cabin space for a sporty coupe | Not quite as sexy as an Audi TT |
| Driving experience balances sporty and sensible | Not as fun to drive as a BMW 2 Series |
| High-performance R is great fun | Potential reliability issues |
Quick Summary
The Volkswagen Scirocco mk3 (2008-2017) is a stylish three-door coupe that, despite sharing underpinnings with the VW Golf mk5, boasts a distinctive, curvaceous design and wider tracks for a unique driving experience. Its interior is classy, robust, and user-friendly, offering comfortable front seating and generous knee-room in the rear, though the sloping roofline can limit headroom for taller passengers. Practicality is surprisingly good for a coupe, with a 312-litre boot expandable to 1,200 litres. The engine range includes turbocharged petrols (1.4 TSI, 2.0 TSI, and the powerful 261bhp Scirocco R) and efficient 2.0 TDI diesels, all providing strong mid-range performance.
The Scirocco delivers high levels of roadholding, accurate steering, and a confident driving feel, balancing agility with comfort for both country roads and long motorway journeys. Available in various trims, all models typically come with alloy wheels, climate control, and a touchscreen infotainment system. While early infotainment tech may feel dated and lack modern smartphone integration, running costs are reasonable with fixed-price servicing options. However, potential reliability issues, particularly with adaptive dampers and turbochargers, mean a pre-purchase inspection by a reputable specialist is highly recommended for peace of mind.
Best for: Drivers seeking a stylish and distinctive coupe with Golf underpinnings, a balance of sporty driving and everyday comfort, good practicality for its class, and strong turbocharged performance (including the high-performance R model).
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising cutting-edge infotainment and smartphone integration, those who frequently carry tall rear passengers, or individuals averse to potential reliability concerns and associated maintenance costs.

The Verdict
You should buy the Scirocco if: You're seeking a stylish and distinctive coupe with Golf underpinnings, a balance of sporty driving and everyday comfort, good practicality for its class, and strong turbocharged performance (including the high-performance R model).
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise cutting-edge infotainment and smartphone integration, frequently carry tall rear passengers, or are averse to potential reliability concerns and associated maintenance costs.
Competitive Position: The Volkswagen Scirocco (2008-2017) offers a compelling package in the used coupe market, blending distinctive styling, strong performance across its turbocharged engine range, and surprisingly good practicality for a car of its type. While its infotainment system shows its age and potential reliability issues warrant caution, its engaging driving dynamics, comfortable ride, and robust build quality make it a strong contender against rivals like the Audi TT and Peugeot RCZ, particularly for those seeking a sporty yet usable daily driver.

4.5 Overall rating
(8 reviews)Beautiful car in all ways. An absolute pleasure to drive. Good value for money at the price I paid . Only quibble is the lack of cruise control.
The car is a perfect all rounder car. You need a good looking car? You need a 4 seater car? You need boot space? Going long distance or short? Finding large car for parking an issue? Cheap road tax? Road bumps causing an issue? Look no further. This car deals with all of these with great positivity and expectations. Only con I can find in this car is the fact that you can feel those tiny bumps on uneven road very easily, it doesn’t ride smoothly as you would think cars are designed for. I’m sure tuning the suspicion may fix this. Otherwise the seats are very comfortable. Only reason why it doesn’t receive a full 5 star rating from me. Thank you
Exciting car just to look at yet alone drive. Great driving experience especially with the DSG box Needs more power but that is easily remedied because of the turbo Avery good buy
The car seems to be running perfectly although I haven’t yet taken it too far but so far so good so I am happy with the purchase. Think that the car was competitively priced and am happy with the model.
Lovely car but not for me Looking for a white model
