BYD Seal (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Genuine 300-mile range	Annoying infotainment system
Strong performance	Smaller boot than some rivals
Loads of standard equipment	Finance deals still aren't the most competitive

Quick Summary

The BYD Seal is a likeable executive saloon that delivers genuine 300-mile range and strong performance from its dual-motor or single rear-wheel-drive powertrains. With 0-62mph times of 3.8 and 5.9 seconds respectively, it offers impressive acceleration. The interior is well-finished with an understated, European-style dashboard, and the standard-fit panoramic roof creates an airy cabin. Practicality is reasonable for a compact saloon, with a 400-litre boot, useful underfloor storage, and a frunk for charging cables. Rear legroom exceeds the Tesla Model 3, and rear-seat charging ports add convenience for longer journeys.

The Seal is surprisingly enjoyable to drive, with responsive steering and keen cornering ability thanks to its double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear setup. However, it falls slightly short of rivals in brake and throttle pedal consistency, and refinement over coarse surfaces isn't quite class-leading. The infotainment system, whilst feature-rich with navigation and EV charger search, can feel laggy and has frustratingly arranged menus. At under £46,000 for the Design model and £49,000 for the AWD Excellence, it's competitively priced with generous standard equipment including heated and ventilated seats, head-up display, and semi-autonomous driving modes. Running costs are low, with a full charge costing roughly £25 on home electricity.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a well-equipped executive EV with genuine range, those prioritising standard equipment over optional extras, and drivers comfortable with a Chinese brand backed by 125 UK dealerships.

Not ideal for: Buyers demanding the finest infotainment experience, those needing maximum boot space, or those seeking the most competitive finance deals in the segment.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Seal if: You seek a well-equipped executive EV with genuine range, prefer standard equipment over optional extras, or are comfortable with a Chinese brand backed by established UK dealership support.

Consider alternatives if: You demand the finest infotainment experience, require maximum boot space, or prioritise the most competitive finance deals in the segment.

Competitive Position: The BYD Seal is a strong contender in the executive EV market, offering excellent value and generous standard equipment at a competitive price point. Whilst the Tesla Model 3 edges ahead on expert rating and the Polestar 2 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 offer superior overall ratings and user satisfaction, the Seal holds its own with genuine 300-mile range, strong performance, and loads of standard kit. Its main weakness is the infotainment system and slightly smaller boot, but for budget-conscious buyers seeking a capable, well-equipped executive saloon, it represents compelling value. The Seal proves that BYD is a serious player in the UK EV market, not merely a budget alternative.
