Ford Puma SUV (2019-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very practical, especially the big boot | Rear headroom could be more generous |
| Generous standard equipment | Short new-car warranty |
| Choice of petrol and electric versions | Some electric rivals offer longer ranges |
Quick Summary
The Ford Puma is a compact SUV that has become the UK's best-selling car, combining style, practicality and driving enjoyment in equal measure. At 4.2 metres long, it competes with rivals such as the Nissan Juke, Volkswagen T-Cross and Hyundai Kona. Despite its small size, the Puma is one of the most practical in its class, featuring a 456-litre boot with a clever hidden MegaBox compartment offering an additional 80 litres of waterproof storage. The electric Puma Gen-E increases this to 523 litres total, making it exceptionally spacious for its segment.
The Puma is powered by a 1.0-litre EcoBoost mild-hybrid petrol engine in three power outputs (123bhp, 153bhp and 168bhp ST), or the all-electric Gen-E with 165bhp and a 233-mile range. All versions deliver crisp handling, lively performance and genuine driving enjoyment. The 2025 facelift brought a larger 12.0-inch touchscreen with SYNC 4, improved materials and the addition of the Gen-E. Running costs are competitive, with petrol models achieving 48-52mpg and the Gen-E offering five years of free servicing through Ford's Power Promise scheme. Prices start from under £30,000, making it excellent value in a competitive segment.
Best for: Buyers seeking a practical, fun-to-drive compact SUV with excellent equipment, families wanting versatile storage, and those considering an affordable electric vehicle option.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum rear headroom, buyers seeking extended new-car warranties, or drivers needing the longest electric range in the segment.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 3.9/5 | 32.5% | 4.5/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 33.6% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Cross | 4/5 | 4.0/5 | 35.9% | 4.3/5 |
| Hyundai Kona | 3/5 | 4.8/5 | 35.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Puma if: You seek a practical, fun-to-drive compact SUV with excellent equipment, need versatile storage, or are considering an affordable electric vehicle option.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum rear headroom, require extended new-car warranties, or need the longest electric range in the segment.
Competitive Position: The Ford Puma stands out as a genuine highlight in the compact crossover class, combining distinctive character, value for money and sporty driving manners. Whilst the Nissan Juke and Hyundai Kona score well with users, the Puma's superior expert rating reflects its exceptional practicality, generous equipment and engaging driving dynamics. The Volkswagen T-Cross offers premium appeal, but the Puma delivers better value and more enjoyment. With its choice of efficient petrol and all-electric powertrains, smart 2025 updates and competitive pricing, the Puma emerges as one of the strongest all-rounders in a competitive segment. Small wonder it's the UK's best-selling car.

3.9 Overall rating
(7 reviews)Fully loaded and fun to drive. Good value for what you get. Interior quality not up to European equivalents but engine and gear box a real peach. Condensation in the front and rear lights annoying though.
Love the look, seats are comfy,. Touchscreen easy to navigate and set up. Nice smooth gear change. Be careful to pull the handbrake right up when parking on a hill. …
Fantastic, nippy , stylish small SUV driving is a joy especially with the very large screens on the dash
why should i pay a lot of money for a suv that doesnt have a reversing camera as standard, and have to pay 5 or 6 hundred pounds to get a drivers assit pack to get a camers
to menny extras need to be added to this car to make it a viable option. eg have to have a drivers assist pack to get a rear view camera. the rear view camera should be standard
