Honda CR-V (2017-2023) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The CR-V is a very reliable family SUV | Fiddly infotainment system |
| Very good fuel economy if you choose the hybrid | Seven-seat models have less luggage space |
| Practical and roomy cabin | Top-spec cars are expensive |
Quick Summary
The fifth-generation Honda CR-V (2017-2023) is a large SUV that competes in a highly crowded segment, offering a practical, safe, and relaxing family experience. While it's a sensible choice, it faces strong rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, which might offer a wider engine range or a more engaging automatic gearbox. However, the CR-V's available hybrid option provides a significant advantage for some buyers. This model was replaced by an all-new CR-V in 2023.
Inside, the CR-V boasts a vast and practical cabin, comfortably accommodating three adults in the second row, though seven-seat versions compromise boot space. While the infotainment system is dated, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are widely available. On the road, it offers a composed and refined drive with smooth handling and capable suspension. Engine options include a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol (manual or CVT, optional AWD) and a frugal hybrid, with the hybrid being particularly efficient for urban driving. Running costs are manageable, and Honda offers flexible service plans.
Best for: Families seeking a practical, safe, and reliable SUV, especially those prioritising a hybrid powertrain or a composed driving experience.
Not ideal for: Buyers who want cutting-edge infotainment, maximum luggage space in a seven-seater, or ultra-low running costs for high-mileage diesel drivers.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda CR-V | 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.1% | 4.2/5 |

The Verdict
You should buy the CR-V if: You're looking for a comfortable, practical, and safe family SUV, especially if you prioritise reliability, a composed driving experience, or the efficiency of a hybrid powertrain.
Consider alternatives if: You desire a car with a more modern infotainment system, require maximum boot space in a seven-seat configuration, or need the ultra-low running costs of a diesel for very high mileage.
Competitive Position: The Honda CR-V (2017-2023) stands as a strong, sensible contender in the fiercely competitive large SUV segment. Its strengths lie in its comfort, practicality, safety, and the appeal of its hybrid option. While it might be let down by an outdated infotainment system and less remarkable petrol efficiency compared to some rivals, its overall reliability and composed nature make it a compelling choice for families seeking a dependable and easy-to-live-with SUV.

The CRV is a good touring car, economical, reliable & a good car for towing caravans, not many modern cars have these attributes. I have driven Hondas both cars & motorcycles and found them excellent.
Basically it is a Honda and will do @ 250,000 miles. It has all the extras and more. There is no comparable car to beat it.
A very good car build quality is great. If you look after your Honda (regular service etc) it will look after you. My previous Honda was 100k+ bullet proof, oil changes and tyres thats all I had to do.
