Quick Summary
The Honda CR-V is a premium Japanese family SUV that has established itself as a spacious and dependable nameplate since the mid-1990s. This sixth-generation model is longer, wider, and more assertive than its predecessor, with Honda positioning it to compete with premium alternatives like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. The CR-V is offered exclusively in hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms, with the standard e:HEV model featuring all-wheel drive and the e:PHEV available in front-wheel drive only. Despite its size, it remains a five-seater with no seven-seat option, distinguishing it from rivals such as the Skoda Kodiaq and Nissan X-Trail.
Practicality is a standout feature, with exceptional rear legroom, reclining rear seats, and a 60:40 split-folding bench that slides fore and aft by up to 19cm. Boot space is generous at 587 litres for the hybrid and 617 litres for the plug-in hybrid. The CR-V prioritises comfort over driving excitement, with soft suspension and a commanding driving position. The plug-in hybrid offers up to 50 miles of electric range and CO2 emissions of just 18g/km, making it attractive for company car drivers. The full hybrid achieves 42.2mpg with 151g/km emissions. All models come fully equipped with heated leather seats, panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control as standard, though the infotainment system lags behind the best in class.
Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical, and dependable SUV with advanced hybrid technology, and company car drivers considering the plug-in hybrid variant for tax efficiency.
Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those prioritising driving excitement, or drivers wanting the latest infotainment technology and user-friendly interfaces.

The Verdict
You should buy the CR-V if: You're seeking a spacious, practical, and dependable family SUV with advanced hybrid technology, or a company car driver considering the plug-in hybrid for tax efficiency.
Consider alternatives if: You're budget-conscious, prioritise driving excitement, or want the latest infotainment technology and user-friendly interfaces.
Competitive Position: The Honda CR-V is a solid premium option in the family SUV market, offering exceptional practicality, roomy interiors, and efficient hybrid powertrains. Whilst it commands a higher price than rivals such as the Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, and Skoda Kodiaq, the CR-V justifies this with comprehensive standard equipment and dependable engineering. The Kia Sportage edges ahead with a higher expert rating and better value proposition, whilst the Toyota RAV4 scores highest with users. However, the CR-V remains an excellent choice for those prioritising space, comfort, and hybrid efficiency over driving dynamics or cutting-edge infotainment.
