Honda HR-V Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Clever Magic Seats in the rear | Small boot by class standards |
| Lots of standard equipment | Hybrid powertrain feels unresponsive |
| Low running costs | Cramped rear headroom |
Quick Summary
The Honda HR-V is a sensible small hybrid SUV that sits between the smaller Ford Puma and larger Nissan Qashqai in the market. Launched in 2021 and lightly facelifted in 2024, it's one of the few cars in its class sold exclusively as a petrol-electric self-charging hybrid. The HR-V offers smart, subdued styling and generous standard equipment across all trim levels, from the entry-level Elegance to the Advance Plus. Its standout feature is the clever Magic Seats in the rear, which fold and flip to maximise cargo space and accommodate tall items—a genuinely impressive engineering solution that sets it apart from rivals.
However, the HR-V has notable limitations. The hybrid powertrain delivers just 129bhp and feels unresponsive, taking 10.6 seconds to reach 62mph, and the engine becomes noisy when pushed. Rear headroom is cramped for taller passengers, and the 319-litre boot is small for the class. Running costs are competitive with an official fuel economy figure of 52.3mpg, and tax incentives for hybrid ownership remain modest. Overall, it's a well-equipped, comfortable car with excellent practicality features, but performance and refinement fall short of expectations, making it a decent rather than outstanding choice in a crowded segment.
Best for: Buyers prioritising comfort, quality, and clever interior solutions; those seeking low running costs and generous standard equipment; families who value the innovative Magic Seats.
Not ideal for: Drivers needing strong performance or responsive acceleration; those requiring maximum boot space; buyers with tall rear passengers or those seeking premium driving dynamics.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda HR-V | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.2% | 4.2/5 |
| Volkswagen T-Roc | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.6% | 4.3/5 |
| Nissan Juke | 3/5 | 4.4/5 | 33.3% | 4.2/5 |
| Toyota C-HR | 4/5 | 4.3/5 | 34.1% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the HR-V if: You prioritise comfort, quality, and clever interior solutions; you seek low running costs and generous standard equipment; you value innovative features like the Magic Seats.
Consider alternatives if: You need strong performance or responsive acceleration, require maximum boot space, have tall rear passengers, or seek premium driving dynamics.
Competitive Position: The Honda HR-V is a well-equipped and comfortable small SUV that excels in interior practicality and standard features. However, it faces stiff competition from more dynamic rivals. The Volkswagen T-Roc and Toyota C-HR both score higher with experts and offer better all-round performance, whilst the Nissan Juke matches the HR-V's expert rating but offers a more engaging drive. The HR-V's hybrid-only powertrain, whilst offering low running costs, limits its appeal compared to rivals offering conventional petrol engines. For buyers specifically seeking a hybrid small SUV with clever interior solutions and generous equipment, the HR-V is compelling; for most others, alternatives offer better value and driving engagement.

5 Overall rating
(5 reviews)Smart styling, comfortable, fantastic array of electronic features, economic and super to drive.
This car drives smoothly and has a lot if sensors which accounts for safety.
Previous car: 2006- Honda Civic 1.8 petrol 150 hp EX - Now - 2019 Honda HRV 1.5 petrol 230hp - yes its slightly slower but during the acceleration you can hear this pleasant growl. You sit higher than in Civic and the sits are more comfortable . Much more gadgets then in Civic ( parking sensors, camera, info systems , sat na, electric mirrors the lot) No manual hand break like in Civic. Space for your feet - space for your left foot next to the clutch but no space next to the acceleration pedal - Civic the other way around. Ride comfort - big improvement but no car is perfect - you will still feel bumps on the road, pot holes and things like that. Ride it self though is more comfy than in Civic. Noise - much quieter than Civic but still you can hear outside noise - its not uncomfortable but it could be better. In the city you probably wont even notice but on the motorway you will. General space inside the HRV - I think its more space - front and back. You sit there like on the couch or armchair. Plenty of space for your legs and your head. HRV is higher than Civic so if you are 180-190 cm you should be fine. Trunk - same as Civic. Gear lever - shorter than Civic. More pleasant just on the right level. What I am missing is control knobs for radio, air con etc. Info systems is all by touch or on the steering wheel. Good visibility from the back and front. For me HRV is like Civic on steroids. Bigger, higher more comfortable.
Very happy with this model. Drives well , it’s comfortable and spacious.
Fuel efficient, comfortable, heated seats high specification, easy to drive
