Hyundai Ioniq 5 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very spacious and practical interior	Driving experience could be more polished
Packed with safety equipment and technology	Relatively cheap-looking inside
Ultra-rapid charging speeds	Not as reliable as the related Kia EV6

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an exceptional piece of design and one of the best family electric vehicles available. Despite its hatchback-like appearance, it's actually the size and bulk of a family SUV at 4.7 metres long, rivalling electric SUVs such as the Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID.4. Launched in 2021 with a full facelift in 2024, the Ioniq 5 now offers 63kWh or 84kWh batteries delivering WLTP-tested ranges of 273 or 320 miles respectively. The remarkably spacious interior features a minimalist dashboard with twin 12.3-inch screens, limo-like rear legroom, and a 520-litre boot expanding to 1,580 litres with seats folded.

The standard Ioniq 5 delivers a serene, comfortable driving experience with light steering and settled ride quality, though it lacks engaging dynamics. Performance is more than adequate, with 0-62mph times ranging from 7.5 to 8.5 seconds depending on battery size. For those seeking genuine thrills, the Ioniq 5 N is a different proposition entirely—with 641bhp, 3.4-second 0-62mph acceleration, and fully variable all-wheel drive, it's one of the best enthusiast electric cars available, rivalling performance cars like the BMW M3. Charging at home costs around £13-£17 per full charge, or as little as 3p per mile with off-peak electricity. All models benefit from over-the-air software updates and comprehensive safety technology.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent technology; those prioritising ultra-rapid charging; and performance enthusiasts considering the Ioniq 5 N.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking a polished, premium interior feel; those valuing reliability above all else; or drivers wanting engaging, dynamic handling in the standard model.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ioniq 5 if: You're seeking a spacious, practical family electric SUV with excellent technology and ultra-rapid charging, or considering the Ioniq 5 N for genuine performance thrills.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise a polished, premium interior, value reliability above all else, or desire engaging, dynamic handling in the standard model.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an exceptional family electric vehicle offering outstanding practicality, comprehensive technology, and ultra-rapid charging capabilities. Whilst the Kia EV6 edges ahead on reliability and the Skoda Enyaq offers marginally better value, the Ioniq 5's spacious interior, minimalist design, and impressive performance options—particularly the thrilling Ioniq 5 N—make it a highly compelling choice. It represents excellent value in the used market, delivering a brilliant all-round package for families and enthusiasts alike.
