Hyundai Ioniq 5 Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Very spacious and practical interior	Driving experience could be more polished
Packed with safety equipment and technology	Relatively cheap-looking inside
Ultra-rapid charging speeds	Not as reliable as the related Kia EV6

Quick Summary

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an exceptional piece of design and one of the best family electric vehicles available. Despite its hatchback-like appearance, it's actually the size of a family SUV at 4.7 metres long, offering cathedral-like interior space with a minimalist dashboard and twin 12.3-inch screens. The remarkably spacious cabin features limo-like rear legroom, a 520-litre boot expanding to 1,580 litres with seats folded, and optional premium relaxation seats that fully recline. Available with 63kWh or 84kWh batteries delivering 273 or 320 miles of WLTP range respectively, the Ioniq 5 combines practicality with impressive technology and ultra-rapid charging capabilities.

The driving experience is serene and settled rather than engaging, with light steering and decent ride comfort, though body float occurs over high-speed undulations. Performance is adequate with 0-62mph times between 7.5 and 8.5 seconds depending on battery size. The Ioniq 5 N is a completely different proposition—a spectacular performance car with 641bhp, 3.4-second 0-62mph acceleration, and handling that rivals petrol sports cars. Running costs are competitive, with home charging costing around 3p per mile on off-peak electricity. All models benefit from over-the-air software updates and comprehensive safety equipment as standard.

Best for: Families seeking a spacious, practical electric SUV with excellent technology and rapid charging; enthusiasts wanting a thrilling performance EV (Ioniq 5 N).

Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising premium interior materials, polished driving dynamics, or maximum reliability compared to the Kia EV6.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ioniq 5 if: You're seeking a spacious, practical family electric SUV with excellent technology and rapid charging, or want a thrilling performance EV (Ioniq 5 N).

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise premium interior materials, polished driving dynamics, or maximum reliability compared to the Kia EV6.

Competitive Position: The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an exceptional family electric vehicle offering outstanding practicality, comprehensive technology, and ultra-rapid charging. Whilst the Kia EV6 edges ahead on reliability and the Skoda Enyaq offers slightly better value, the Ioniq 5's spacious interior, impressive equipment levels, and performance credentials make it a compelling choice. The Ioniq 5 N redefines performance electric vehicles, rivalling petrol sports cars whilst maintaining family practicality. For buyers wanting a brilliant all-round package, the Ioniq 5 is simply a great car.
