Kia Stonic (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Generous seven-year warranty | Most basic cars miss out on some safety systems |
| Lots of standard kit on all models | Firm ride won't suit everyone |
| Good to drive | Diesel particulate filters can clog if the car is only used for short journeys |
Quick Summary
The Kia Stonic (2017-present) is Kia's compact SUV, sharing mechanicals with the Rio hatchback. It was introduced to compete in the booming small SUV segment against rivals like the Seat Arona and Skoda Kamiq. Known for its appealing styling and generous standard equipment, the Stonic offers good build quality and a classy, up-to-date cabin, despite a button-heavy layout. It features a more hatchback-like driving position and agile handling, though with a firmer ride than some competitors. Practicality includes space for four adults, potentially a fifth, and a 352-litre boot.
Engine options primarily consist of an efficient 1.0-litre turbo T-GDi petrol, with a less potent 1.4-litre initially available and a noisy 1.6-litre CRDi diesel that was later dropped. Trim levels are well-equipped, starting with '2' and evolving to 'GT-Line' and 'Connect' after a 2020 overhaul, consistently including features like a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Running costs are low, with efficient engines, low insurance groups, and Kia's attractive fixed-price service plans, all backed by a seven-year warranty, making it a strong all-rounder.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, well-equipped, and practical compact SUV with a long warranty, good driving dynamics, and low running costs. Those who appreciate a hatchback-like driving feel.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising maximum comfort over sporty handling, those needing a larger boot than 352 litres, or those who require advanced safety features on the very lowest trim levels.

The Verdict
You should buy the Stonic if: You're looking for a stylish, well-equipped, and practical compact SUV with a long warranty, good driving dynamics, and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum comfort over sporty handling, need a larger boot, or require advanced safety features as standard on all trims.
Competitive Position: The Kia Stonic is a strong contender in the compact SUV market, offering a stylish design, generous standard equipment, and Kia's industry-leading seven-year warranty. While its ride is firmer than some rivals and lower trims might lack certain advanced safety features, its engaging driving experience, low running costs, and strong reliability make it a highly competitive and well-rounded choice. It particularly shines for those seeking a practical and good-value small SUV.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)The Kia Stonic 4 is well appointed and was good value for money. Ours could do with a sunroof. Similar to the Hyundai Koni.
Fully equipped, great build quality, excellent manufacturers warranty. Value for money.
If you are looking for a crossover or SUV then take a look at the Kia stonic, With seven year warranty and fantastic build quality its already leaves the competition behind.
Kia has a good reputation so we decided this model would suit our requirements. It has all the features you would like in a mild hybrid car. The value of second hand cars at the moment is high but we did look around and this was the best deal we could get. the only thing missing is automatic folding mirrors !!! .... We did look at several other makes and models, Renault Capture, MG ZS and Hyundai Kona.
