Kia Stonic (2017-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Generous seven-year warranty | Most basic cars miss out on some safety systems |
| Lots of standard kit on all models | Firm ride won't suit everyone |
| Good to drive | Diesel particulate filters can clog if used for short journeys |
Quick Summary
The Kia Stonic is the Korean manufacturer's smallest SUV, launched in 2017 to compete with rivals such as the Seat Arona, Citroën C3 Aircross, and Skoda Kamiq. Built on the same mechanical platform as the Kia Rio hatchback, it offers a compact footprint with impressive build quality and materials. The cabin is well-appointed and contemporary, though slightly button-heavy. The Stonic majors on styling and equipment, delivering a more engaging drive than typical SUVs whilst maintaining practicality with a 352-litre boot and comfortable seating for five.
The Stonic is more competent and agile through corners than expected, resisting body roll whilst feeling taut and keen, though the firmer ride may not suit those prioritising comfort. Engine options include a 1.4-litre petrol (98bhp), a punchier 1.0-litre turbo T-GDi (118bhp or 99bhp from 2020), and a 1.6-litre diesel (108bhp, discontinued 2020). All models feature five or six-speed manual gearboxes, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic available. Fuel economy ranges from 49.6mpg to 56.5mpg depending on engine and test procedure. Insurance groups span 8 to 14 of 50, keeping premiums low. Kia's renowned seven-year warranty and strong reliability record provide excellent peace of mind.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish compact SUV with generous equipment, strong warranty protection, and engaging driving dynamics, particularly those valuing reliability and low running costs.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising maximum interior space, commanding driving position, or requiring comprehensive safety systems on entry-level models, or drivers preferring a softer, more comfortable ride.

The Verdict
You should buy the Stonic if: You're seeking a stylish compact SUV with generous equipment, strong warranty protection, and engaging driving dynamics, particularly valuing reliability and low running costs.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise maximum interior space, a commanding driving position, comprehensive safety systems on entry-level models, or prefer a softer, more comfortable ride.
Competitive Position: The Kia Stonic is an impressive all-rounder in the compact SUV segment, offering excellent value with generous standard equipment and Kia's renowned seven-year warranty. Whilst the Skoda Kamiq edges ahead on expert rating and overall score, the Stonic matches it on user satisfaction and exceeds rivals on deal availability. It delivers engaging driving dynamics superior to the Citroën C3 Aircross, though the Seat Arona offers slightly more boot space. The Stonic's combination of style, equipment, reliability, and warranty makes it a compelling choice for buyers seeking a well-rounded compact SUV without premium pricing.

5 Overall rating
(4 reviews)The Kia Stonic 4 is well appointed and was good value for money. Ours could do with a sunroof. Similar to the Hyundai Koni.
Fully equipped, great build quality, excellent manufacturers warranty. Value for money.
If you are looking for a crossover or SUV then take a look at the Kia stonic, With seven year warranty and fantastic build quality its already leaves the competition behind.
Kia has a good reputation so we decided this model would suit our requirements. It has all the features you would like in a mild hybrid car. The value of second hand cars at the moment is high but we did look around and this was the best deal we could get. the only thing missing is automatic folding mirrors !!! .... We did look at several other makes and models, Renault Capture, MG ZS and Hyundai Kona.
