Mazda2 (2015-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Improved safety after 2020 refresh | Boot is on the small side |
| Low running costs | Non-turbocharged engines can feel flat |
| Fun to drive | No EV model offered |
Quick Summary
The Mazda2 (2015-present) is a stylish and engaging supermini that often flies under the radar. Despite its compact dimensions, it offers decent interior space for passengers, though its 280-litre boot is on the smaller side compared to some modern rivals. Praised for its accurate steering and good grip, it delivers a fun-to-drive experience, making it an enjoyable choice for city and open-road motoring, even if the ride isn't as cushioned as some competitors.
Power comes from 1.5-litre non-turbocharged petrol engines, which, while needing to be revved, pair well with a crisp manual gearbox. This contributes to excellent fuel economy, with petrol models achieving low 60s MPG. Running costs are further kept in check by reasonable insurance groups and fixed-price servicing. Continuous updates have ensured strong equipment levels across trims, including a modern infotainment system with smartphone integration in later models.
Best for: Drivers seeking a fun-to-drive supermini, buyers prioritising low running costs and good fuel economy, and those looking for a well-equipped small car.
Not ideal for: Buyers needing a large boot, those who prefer turbocharged engines with strong mid-range torque, or individuals wanting an EV option.

The Verdict
You should buy the Mazda2 if: You're looking for a fun-to-drive supermini with low running costs and good standard equipment.
Consider alternatives if: You need a larger boot, prefer turbocharged engines, or want an EV option.
Competitive Position: The Mazda2 is a strong, yet often overlooked, contender in the supermini segment. It excels with its engaging driving dynamics, stylish design, and impressive fuel economy, making it a great all-rounder for those seeking a fun and economical small car. While its boot space is more modest than some rivals and its non-turbo engines require a more active driving style, its overall package of reliability, low running costs, and well-equipped trims makes it a highly sensible and appealing alternative to more mainstream options.

4.7 Overall rating
(10 reviews)With a smooth transmission and clutch, this easily maneuverable car presents an excellent value for money. Mazda 2 comes with a range of tech goodies such as built-in navigation, and as a compact hatchback, it is a great competitor for a Corsa or Fiesta. Very happy with the purchase!
Great car. Easy to maneuver and really good heating/cooling system.
Wet tidy car inside and out, basic radio hit ok, pulls well up hills - brilliant for where I live- overall very pleased with car and service received
Very comfortable light care, enjoyable to drive and keeps you on your toes even with its low horse power of 85 and this cheap car insurance and road tax can’t go wrong.
Nice enough car but is a very low ride, not much adjustment in driver seat to compensate for this. Main bug Bear though is that it has no rear parking camera OR parking assist sensors!
