Mazda6 (2013-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Enjoyable to drive	Not as roomy as the likes of the Skoda Superb
One of the most reliable big family cars	Petrol engines need a lot of revs
Lots of standard equipment	No plug-in hybrid

Quick Summary

The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is the third generation of Mazda's family saloon and estate, featuring the manufacturer's own platform and engines rather than Ford-based components. It stands out for its engaging driving dynamics, borrowing characteristics from the MX-5 sports car, making it considerably more fun than typical saloons or estates. The model is available as both a saloon with a 480-litre boot and a Tourer estate with a 522-litre boot, offering spacious accommodation for four tall adults on long journeys. Equipment levels are generous across the range, with even entry-level models featuring Bluetooth, USB charging, alloy wheels, parking sensors, and cruise control.

The Mazda6 launched with a choice of 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines (143bhp or 163bhp) or 2.2-litre turbodiesel options (148bhp or 173bhp). The lower-powered diesel is particularly gutsy and efficient, achieving around 50mpg in real-world driving, whilst the 2.0-litre petrol manages approximately 40mpg. The diesel variant is ULEZ exempt, avoiding additional charges in central London. A 2016 model or later is recommended, as the seven-inch touchscreen became standard with improved functionality and a rotary controller. From 2019, an eight-inch screen was introduced. As a used buy, the Mazda6 represents exceptional value due to steep depreciation in the unpopular large family saloon market, making it a reliable and likeable alternative to pricier rivals.

Best for: Drivers seeking an engaging, reliable family car with excellent value, those prioritising driving enjoyment over maximum space, and buyers wanting generous standard equipment at an affordable price.

Not ideal for: Those requiring maximum rear legroom or boot space (consider the Skoda Superb), buyers wanting plug-in hybrid options, or those preferring a broader range of engine and gearbox choices.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Mazda6 if: You're seeking an engaging, reliable family car with excellent value, prioritise driving enjoyment over maximum space, or want generous standard equipment at an affordable price.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum rear legroom or boot space, want plug-in hybrid options, or prefer a broader range of engine and gearbox choices.

Competitive Position: The Mazda6 (2013-2022) is a seriously good family car that's spacious, affordable, well-equipped, safe, and hardy. Whilst it's hard to recommend new due to fresher rivals like the Skoda Superb offering more space and a broader engine range, it's much easier to recommend as a used buy. The steep initial depreciation means fantastic deals on second-hand examples, which promise to be reliable, effortless, and likeable for less than most obvious alternatives. Its engaging driving dynamics and generous standard equipment make it a compelling choice for those valuing enjoyment alongside practicality.
