Mitsubishi Outlander (2026) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Smooth hybrid system	Not the roomiest seven-seater you'll encounter
Potentially low running costs	There are cheaper alternatives that are more practical
Does pretty well for standard equipment	Some profound ergonomic issues

Quick Summary

The Mitsubishi Outlander (2026) marks the triumphant return of a once-immensely popular plug-in hybrid SUV to the UK market. This latest incarnation combines a 2.4-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, delivering 295bhp and an electric-only range of up to 53 miles. Available as a seven-seater Nativa or five-seater Diamond, it now uniquely offers both seven seats and plug-in hybrid technology simultaneously. The smooth power delivery, generous standard equipment, and improved interior quality make it an appealing evolution for previous Outlander PHEV enthusiasts.

However, the market landscape has changed dramatically since the Outlander's previous success. Numerous rivals now offer comparable or superior practicality, performance, and value, with some costing considerably less. The third-row seats are genuinely occasional only, with tight headroom and difficult access. Infotainment menus are confusing, and ergonomic issues persist. Whilst the Outlander is a competent and likeable car, it's no longer the unique proposition it once was, and buyers should carefully consider the growing competition before committing.

Best for: Nostalgic previous Outlander PHEV owners, buyers seeking a seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV with smooth power delivery, and those prioritising standard equipment and comfort over outright practicality.

Not ideal for: Buyers needing genuine seven-seat practicality, those seeking the best value in the seven-seater PHEV SUV segment, or drivers frustrated by complex infotainment systems and ergonomic compromises.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Outlander if: You're a nostalgic previous Outlander PHEV owner, seeking a seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV with smooth power delivery and generous standard equipment.

Consider alternatives if: You need genuine seven-seat practicality, want the best value in the seven-seater PHEV SUV segment, or are frustrated by complex infotainment systems and ergonomic compromises.

Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Outlander (2026) is a competent and likeable seven-seater plug-in hybrid SUV that successfully combines both seven seats and PHEV technology. However, it faces intense competition from rivals offering superior practicality, performance, or value. The Peugeot 5008 and Chery Tiggo 8 both achieve higher overall ratings, whilst the Skoda Kodiaq offers five-seater PHEV practicality at a lower price point. The Outlander's smooth hybrid system and generous equipment are appealing, but they don't fully compensate for its cramped third-row seats, confusing infotainment, and higher running costs compared to some alternatives. It remains a solid choice for those prioritising comfort and familiarity over outright practicality or value.
