Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Pioneering plug-in hybrid promises low running costs for the right buyer | Dated infotainment and interior finish |
| Choice of five or seven seats if you don't buy the hybrid | Early PHEVs have a smaller battery than post-2019 cars |
| Plenty of room for passengers and their luggage | Dull to drive |
Quick Summary
The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) is a durable and practical SUV that offers honest, workhorse appeal at a good price. Its main selling point is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option, which was unique in the large budget SUV class for many years, delivering very low CO2 emissions and pure electric running for 20-25 miles in real-world driving, with a 2.4-litre petrol engine as backup. The Outlander provides masses of interior space with rear seats that fold easily, and the option of a seven-seat layout on non-hybrid models. A 2018 facelift brought a bigger battery for the PHEV, improved cabin materials, and better infotainment, making it feel closer to newer rivals.
However, the Outlander is underwhelming to drive, with noticeable body movement, a chattery ride in town, and a boomy petrol engine that lacks refinement. The diesel and non-hybrid petrol options face stiff competition from better-engineered rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Nissan X-Trail. The PHEV remains the pick of the range, offering competitive depreciation and lower running costs than diesel alternatives, provided you charge regularly. As a used buy, the Outlander has real merit, though rivals now highlight how dated it feels in terms of infotainment and interior finish.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, practical SUV; company car drivers interested in the PHEV's low running costs; families needing seven-seat flexibility.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising engaging driving dynamics, premium interior finishes, or modern infotainment systems; drivers covering large distances or frequent motorway miles without regular charging access.
Comparison vs Key Rivals

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Outlander | 3/5 | 4.7/5 | 30.9% | 4.1/5 |
| Skoda Kodiaq | 4/5 | 4.6/5 | 34.1% | 4.4/5 |
| Nissan X-Trail | 3/5 | 4.6/5 | 32.4% | 4.2/5 |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | 4/5 | 4.5/5 | 33.5% | 4.3/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Outlander if: You're seeking a spacious, practical SUV on a budget; interested in the PHEV's low running costs as a company car; or need seven-seat flexibility for family use.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, premium interior finishes, or modern infotainment systems; or require air conditioning as standard on all trims.
Competitive Position: The Mitsubishi Outlander (2013-2021) is a capable contender in the used large SUV market, offering excellent practicality and space at competitive prices. However, rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq and Hyundai Santa Fe now offer superior driving dynamics, interior quality, and infotainment systems. The Outlander's unique plug-in hybrid option remains compelling for company car drivers and those committed to regular charging, delivering lower running costs than diesel alternatives. As a used buy, it represents genuine value for budget-conscious families, though its dated feel and dull driving experience may deter those seeking a more engaging SUV.

(43 reviews)Customers say
The Mitsubishi Outlander is appreciated by owners for its spacious interior, hybrid efficiency, and overall reliability across multiple model years. Many drivers find the Outlander to be versatile, handling well in various conditions and offering ample cargo space. However, some concerns have been raised regarding its sporty driving experience and the potential for clutch issues in certain models. While the hybrid variants are favored for their eco-friendly features, the model line faces scrutiny for parts availability in some regions.

What people say
Reliable and roomy family car, dog friendly and affordable excellent tow car.
A do everything car. This is our 4th Outlander and to date all have been 100% reliable. Just a brilliant vehicle.
Wonderful plug in hybrid if you work close to home you can drive on electric saving money and it’s still one of a few hybrids you can tow with
What a car!!! All the comforts a driver needs plenty room in the back and the boot. The hybrid system works a treat and I can go to work and back on a full charge so it costs me literally nothing in fuel.
This car is brilliant. So easy to drive and comfortable. Going round corners can be a bit boat like but great around town and for them short journeys. I get about 26 miles from a single charge more if I use eco mode and I am on a single journey. Smaller shorter journeys tend to bring the average down a little but still great for the school run
