Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Lots of space in the cabin Not compatible with CCS charging
Affordable for a family EV Driving position is short on adjustment
Extremely cheap to run Many rivals will go further on a full charge

Quick Summary

The second-generation Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) offered a modern take on the electric family hatchback, with sharp, eye-catching looks that integrated well with non-electric cars. It excels in practicality, providing generous passenger room, particularly in the rear, and a large 435-litre boot, surpassing many rivals like the Ford Focus. While the driving position can be an issue for taller drivers due to limited steering wheel adjustment, it generally offers a comfortable and smooth ride, making urban commutes stress-free.

Initially available with a 40kWh battery offering 168 miles WLTP range, a 62kWh 'e+' model later boosted this to 239 miles. Running costs are extremely low, with cheap charging (around £5.60-£9 per charge) and tax benefits. However, its CHAdeMO charging port is becoming less common than CCS, limiting rapid charging options compared to some rivals. The Leaf includes useful features like an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and, on higher trims, ProPilot semi-autonomous driving.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, families needing generous interior and boot space, those seeking low running costs, and drivers who prioritize car availability over cutting-edge charging technology.

Not ideal for: Drivers prioritizing extensive steering wheel adjustment for comfort, those who frequently undertake long journeys requiring widespread rapid charging (due to CHAdeMO), or buyers seeking the absolute highest range or efficiency.

The Verdict

You should buy the Leaf if: You're a budget-conscious buyer, a family needing generous interior and boot space, seeking low running costs, or a driver who prioritizes car availability over cutting-edge charging technology.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritize extensive steering wheel adjustment for comfort, frequently undertake long journeys requiring widespread rapid charging (due to CHAdeMO), or seek the absolute highest range or efficiency.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a very worthy option in the electric family hatchback class, especially for its affordability and generous interior space. While newer rivals like the Kia e-Niro might offer longer ranges and more modern CCS charging compatibility, the Leaf remains a strong contender due to its competitive pricing and often shorter waiting lists. Its low running costs and practical design make it a sensible choice for families and commuters, despite some limitations in driving position adjustment and charging infrastructure.

It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.

Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!

feels great to have an electric car - however the 24 kilowatt models ( older pre 2017 models) - only do about 105 miles per charge & a charge ising home socket- takes all night ( 8 hours)- & a fast 2 hour charge can degrade the battery- which provides power fir the motor. All in all - best electric cars are the newer ones which can do over 200 miles per charge- so its swings & roundabouts for the 24 kw & 30 kw motor electric vehicles- but they are perfect for mini cab drivers.
