Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lots of space in the cabin | Not compatible with CCS charging |
| Affordable for a family EV | Driving position is short on adjustment |
| Extremely cheap to run | Many rivals will go further on a full charge |
Quick Summary
The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024), the second-generation model, represents a significant step forward in electric family hatchbacks. With sharp, modern styling that doesn't deliberately stand out, it offers a practical 435-litre boot and generous passenger space—more than a Ford Focus. The e-pedal setting allows one-pedal driving in urban environments, whilst the 148bhp electric motor delivers responsive acceleration and motorway comfort. Standard equipment includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear-view camera, digital dials, and autonomous emergency braking.
Running costs are exceptionally low, with charging costing around 5p per mile on standard domestic tariffs. The Leaf achieves approximately 3.6 to 4.0 miles per kWh and benefits from zero VED road tax and free entry into London Congestion and ULEZ zones. Servicing is affordable at around £100 for minor and £150 for major services. However, the lack of CCS rapid charging compatibility, restrictive driving position, and limited range compared to newer rivals like the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric are notable drawbacks. The Leaf e+ model offers a larger 62kWh battery for extended range, though real-world performance remains modest.
Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable family electric car, those with access to home charging, and drivers with moderate daily mileage requirements.
Not ideal for: Long-distance commuters, those prioritising maximum range, drivers needing extensive driving position adjustment, or buyers seeking the latest CCS rapid charging technology.

The Verdict
You should buy the Leaf if: You're seeking an affordable family electric car with spacious interior, low running costs, and access to home charging for moderate daily mileage.
Consider alternatives if: You require maximum range, long-distance capability, CCS rapid charging compatibility, or extensive driving position adjustment options.
Competitive Position: The Nissan Leaf (2017-2024) is a sensible, affordable entry point into electric family motoring with excellent interior space and running costs. However, newer competition has leapfrogged it in several areas. The Kia e-Niro offers superior range, CCS charging, and better value retention, whilst the Peugeot e-2008 provides more efficient long-distance touring. The Renault Zoe is cheaper but offers less space. The Leaf remains a worthy option for budget-conscious buyers with modest range requirements and access to home charging, though availability and affordability advantages over rivals are diminishing as the market matures.

3.9 Overall rating
(6 reviews)The leaf is a great vehicle, well built, sturdy, quiet with all the requisite features you want or need in a car. The range is good, and best of all you can charge it at home
Very comfortable seats. Smooth driving experience. Limited range below 200miles
It should be remembered that the Leaf is on its second generation model and has sold nearly half a million. It may be short on chargeable miles, but has 10 years of construction/usage behind it. It has plenty of room, is well equipped and has good performance, with a very good reputation for reliability. Because of this, it stands alone in the market place and is a steal on the second-hand market.
Battery capacity is a big problem. with full heating on and driving for 1.7 miles, the range just dropped by 14 miles! Not great to use in cold countries even for short trips. Mileage anxiety will be a constant stress. Otherwise, the car drives fantastic!
For me all of the New feature that the driver wants it is all in this model! Excellent Car !
