Nissan Micra (2017-present) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Strong on safety	Tight on space in the back
Low insurance costs	Early 1.0-litre cars are very slow
Lots of well priced second-hand examples	Shorter new car warranty than some rivals

Quick Summary

The Nissan Micra (2017-present) is the fifth generation of Nissan's familiar small car, representing a significant leap forward from its predecessor. This modern and edgy design finally brings driver aids and technology features up to date. The 2019 update simplified trim options whilst maintaining strong infotainment across the range, including colour screens with Bluetooth, digital radio, USB input and Apple CarPlay on most models. The 89bhp turbocharged 0.9-litre petrol engine is the best option for used buyers, offering plenty of low-down torque ideal for town driving and efficient motorway cruising. Later 2019 and 2020 updates introduced a new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 99bhp or 115bhp options, though the lower-powered variant offers better value.

The Micra isn't ideal for small families due to tight rear legroom and headroom, though the 300-litre boot is a decent size with 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Running costs are competitive, with real-world fuel economy of 40-45mpg on the manual 1.0-litre models. Insurance falls into group 8, making it suitable for learner drivers, and servicing costs are affordable. The Micra is more recommendable as a used buy than new, thanks to competitive second-hand prices and decent equipment levels. However, it lacks a unique selling point compared to rivals, making it primarily attractive when an unbeatable deal is available.

Best for: Learner drivers, young drivers seeking low insurance costs, budget-conscious buyers finding excellent deals, and those prioritising safety and modern infotainment.

Not ideal for: Small families needing rear space, buyers seeking the most engaging driving dynamics, or those wanting the longest warranty coverage.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Micra if: You're a learner or young driver seeking low insurance costs, looking for a budget-friendly runabout with modern safety features, or have found an exceptional deal on a used model.

Consider alternatives if: You need rear passenger space for a small family, prioritise engaging driving dynamics, or require an extended warranty as standard.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Micra (2017-present) is a solid option in the supermini market, particularly as a used purchase. Whilst it lacks a unique selling point compared to rivals, its strong safety credentials, low insurance costs, and competitive second-hand pricing make it attractive for budget-conscious buyers and learner drivers. The Ford Fiesta offers superior driving dynamics, the Renault Clio provides better value and style, and the Toyota Yaris delivers greater reliability, so it's worth comparing these alternatives before committing. The Micra is best approached as a pragmatic choice when an unbeatable deal is available rather than as a first choice.
