Nissan Navara (2014-2022) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Large load bed and generous payload	Apple CarPlay and Android Auto unavailable before 2019 facelift
More car-like to drive than most pick-ups	The SsangYong Musso has a longer warranty
Punchy and fuel-efficient diesel engine	Not as wieldy as a conventional SUV

Quick Summary

The Nissan Navara (2014-2022) is Nissan's popular pick-up truck, which has become increasingly sought-after in the UK thanks to favourable tax treatment. Available in both double-cab and king-cab body styles, the Navara offers impressive practicality with a large load bed and generous payload capacity of up to 1,315kg on chassis models. It can tow trailers weighing up to 3,500kg, making it a versatile workhorse. The coil-spring rear suspension delivers a more car-like ride than most pick-ups, whilst the punchy 2.3-litre diesel engine is available with either 161bhp or 187bhp, providing strong torque figures of 313lb ft or 332lb ft respectively.

Running costs are highly competitive, with fuel economy among the best in the pick-up class—early models achieved 44.9mpg, improving to 46.3mpg after 2016 Euro 6 upgrades, and further refinement following the 2019 facelift. Service intervals are lengthy at 12,500 miles or two years on later examples, keeping maintenance costs low. The Navara features part-time 4WD, a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox, and achieved a four out of five Euro NCAP safety rating. High-spec models like the N-Connecta and Tekna offer excellent value with comprehensive equipment.

Best for: Commercial users, those requiring a capable workhorse with excellent payload and towing capacity, budget-conscious buyers seeking low running costs, and those preferring a more car-like driving experience than traditional pick-ups.

Not ideal for: Buyers seeking the manoeuvrability of a conventional SUV, those requiring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on pre-2019 models, or those wanting the longest warranty available in the pick-up class.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Navara if: You require a capable workhorse with excellent payload and towing capacity, seek low running costs and competitive servicing intervals, or prefer a more car-like driving experience than traditional pick-ups.

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the manoeuvrability of a conventional SUV, require Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on pre-2019 models, or want the longest warranty available in the pick-up class.

Competitive Position: The Nissan Navara (2014-2022) stands as an excellent all-rounder in the pick-up truck market. Whilst rivals like the Volkswagen Amarok offer V6 diesel power and the Ford Ranger enjoys strong user ratings, the Navara's combination of fuel efficiency, generous payload, car-like handling, and competitive running costs make it a sensible choice for commercial users and private buyers alike. The Mitsubishi L200 offers similar practicality, but the Navara's superior fuel economy and punchy engine performance give it a clear advantage. As a used purchase, the Navara represents outstanding value for those seeking a capable, economical, and versatile pick-up truck.
