Porsche Cayenne (2003-2010) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Quick and sporty for an SUV	Awkward looks
Sensible used prices if you choose a V6	Very expensive to run
Practical for passengers and luggage	Big and unwieldy around town

Quick Summary

The Porsche Cayenne (2003-2010) was a revelation when launched, proving that SUVs could be both practical and thrilling to drive. This first-generation model combines sports car handling with family-friendly space, featuring a generous 540-litre boot that expands to 1,770 litres with the rear seats folded. The elevated driving position offers commanding visibility, whilst the interior comfortably accommodates five adults with excellent leg and headroom. A 2006 facelift brought refined styling, direct fuel injection, and optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, enhancing both aesthetics and performance.

The engine line-up caters to various needs, from the economical 3.0-litre diesel V6 (introduced 2009) delivering over 30mpg, to the naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V8 S with 335bhp and the potent Turbo variants reaching 444bhp. However, running costs are substantial across all models, with fuel consumption typically around 20mpg, high annual tax bills, and expensive servicing. The Cayenne's bulk—nearly 4.8 metres long—can prove problematic in tight urban spaces. Despite these drawbacks, it remains a compelling choice for those seeking performance, practicality, and the Porsche badge, particularly in V6 form.

Best for: Drivers seeking a high-performance SUV with genuine sports car credentials, families requiring spacious practicality, and those willing to accept premium running costs for an engaging driving experience.

Not ideal for: Budget-conscious buyers, those concerned about fuel economy and maintenance expenses, or drivers navigating congested city centres regularly.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Cayenne if: You seek a high-performance SUV with genuine sports car credentials, require spacious practicality for families, and are willing to accept premium running costs for an engaging driving experience.

Consider alternatives if: You are budget-conscious, concerned about fuel economy and maintenance expenses, or regularly navigate congested city centres.

Competitive Position: The Porsche Cayenne (2003-2010) stands apart in the premium SUV market as a genuinely thrilling drive, combining sports car handling with practical family space. Whilst rivals like the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 offer comparable practicality and refinement, the Cayenne delivers a more engaging driving experience and superior performance credentials. However, its running costs are considerably higher, and its distinctive styling remains divisive. For those prioritising driving dynamics and willing to invest in ownership, the Cayenne—particularly in V6 form—remains a compelling proposition, though the Range Rover Sport offers a more balanced alternative for those seeking luxury and capability without the premium price tag.
