Renault Clio (2026) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stylish looks and chic image | Rear seat space rather tight |
| Comfortable and easy to drive | Infotainment could be better |
| Plenty of tech available | Entry-level trim is a bit basic |
Quick Summary
The Renault Clio is a long-running French supermini that has been a familiar sight on British roads since 1990, with over one million examples sold in Britain. The current model is an extensively updated version of the fifth-generation car, featuring a major facelift in 2023 with refreshed styling inspired by newer Renault models. The simplified range focuses on efficiency and electrification, with all diesel engines dropped in favour of a turbocharged petrol engine and an E-Tech self-charging hybrid option. It offers a spacious 391-litre boot, though the hybrid variant reduces this to 301 litres.
The Clio delivers a very grown-up-feeling driving experience, especially on the motorway, with a pliant, comfortable ride and calm refinement. The 1.0-litre TCe turbocharged petrol produces 90bhp with eager acceleration, whilst the E-Tech hybrid combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for 143bhp and impressive efficiency of up to 65.7mpg. With four trim levels available and competitive pricing compared to rivals, the Clio provides excellent value. Insurance costs are competitive, with even the flagship hybrid model slotting into group 16. The smartly-trimmed cabin is dominated by digital screens and plenty of technology, though the infotainment system could be more intuitive.
Best for: Buyers seeking a stylish, comfortable, and easy-to-drive supermini with economical engine choices, those prioritising a grown-up driving experience, and customers wanting competitive pricing with plenty of available technology.
Not ideal for: Passengers requiring generous rear seat space, those who prefer intuitive infotainment systems, or buyers seeking the most practical boot space in the supermini class.

The Verdict
You should buy the Clio if: You're seeking a stylish, comfortable, and easy-to-drive supermini with economical engine choices, prioritising a grown-up driving experience, or wanting competitive pricing with plenty of available technology.
Consider alternatives if: You require generous rear seat space, prefer intuitive infotainment systems, or need the most practical boot space in the supermini class.
Competitive Position: The Renault Clio is a solid, sensible, and stylish choice in the competitive supermini sector. It provides a grown-up driving experience, economical engine options, and a smartly-trimmed cabin dominated by digital screens and technology. Whilst it isn't the most practical car of its type, nor the cheapest or most exciting, it performs well across all areas. The hybrid powertrain offers compelling efficiency credentials, and aggressive pricing compared to rivals like the Volkswagen Polo and Peugeot 208 makes it excellent value for money-conscious buyers seeking style and comfort.

4.7 Overall rating
(3 reviews)Cracking little car. We bought it for our son who is 6’ 3”” and there’s plenty of space in it. Great little runner. Would highly recommend.
Budget friendly and family oriented car. Best choice i made while choosing new car.
Good styling and SPEC. But as with all Renault vehicles poor build quality and high depreciation.
