Seat Ibiza (2008-2017) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Attractive styling	A Ford Fiesta is generally sweeter to drive
Broad range of engines	A Toyota or Kia could be more dependable
Reasonable running costs	Base-model trims are sparsely equipped

Quick Summary

The Seat Ibiza (2008-2017), the fourth-generation model, is an attractively styled supermini that rivals the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta. This all-new generation offered modern features including a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, front fog lights with cornering mode, and hill hold assist. Engine options ranged from 1.2- to 1.6-litre petrols, with later turbocharged TSI and TDI variants providing improved efficiency. The Ibiza was larger than its predecessor, delivering more interior space and a 292-litre boot, with the ST estate offering 430 litres. Safety credentials were strong, achieving five stars for adult occupant protection in Euro NCAP testing.

The Ibiza feels agile and responsive initially, though the chassis lacks the playful reactivity of a Fiesta. The ride is pleasant, with good wind and road noise insulation. Running costs are sensible, with 1.2-litre petrol models averaging 47mpg and the 103bhp TDI diesel achieving 67.2mpg. The broad range of trim levels—including S, SE, FR, Sport Coupe, ST estate, and hot Cupra—ensures there's a variant for most needs. Reliability is generally good, though earlier Cupra engines had issues. Service costs are manageable, with major and minor services combined around £500 for older cars.

Best for: Buyers seeking attractive styling, diverse engine options, and reasonable running costs; those wanting a practical estate variant (ST); and drivers looking for an affordable hot hatch (Cupra).

Not ideal for: Those prioritising the finest handling (Ford Fiesta), maximum dependability (Toyota or Kia), or well-equipped base models, or buyers considering earlier Cupra variants with reliability concerns.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Ibiza if: You value attractive styling, diverse engine options, and reasonable running costs, or you're seeking a practical estate variant (ST) or an affordable hot hatch (Cupra).

Consider alternatives if: You prioritise the finest handling (Ford Fiesta), maximum dependability (Toyota or Kia), well-equipped base models, or you're considering earlier Cupra variants with reliability concerns.

Competitive Position: The Seat Ibiza (2008-2017) is a strong contender in the used supermini market, offering attractive styling, a broad range of engines, and reasonable running costs. Whilst it may not match the Ford Fiesta for driving dynamics or offer the dependability of a Toyota or Kia, its diverse trim levels, practical estate option, and affordable hot hatch variant make it an appealing choice for buyers seeking variety and value. The Skoda Fabia offers more luggage space, whilst the MINI Hatch provides premium appeal, but the Ibiza's overall package remains compelling for those prioritising style and engine choice.
