Toyota Auris (2012-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Extremely reliable	Very boring to drive
Comfortable ride	Rear seat space is only average
Touring Sports estate has a big boot	Boring interior design

Quick Summary

The Toyota Auris (2012-2019) is an affordable and economical family car available in both five-door hatchback and estate (Touring Sports) body styles. This second-generation model replaced the Corolla nameplate in certain markets, offering a no-nonsense approach to family motoring. Well-built, comfortable and spacious, the Auris is extremely easy to drive and achieved a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. The Touring Sports estate increases boot space to 507 litres, whilst the hybrid option maintains the same boot capacity as the petrol variants.

Low running costs are a major strength, with fuel economy exceeding 40mpg on entry-level petrol models and significantly better on turbocharged, diesel and hybrid variants. VED rates are inexpensive, servicing costs are reasonable and the cars hold their value well. Whilst the Auris lags behind competitors like the Ford Focus on driving engagement and feels somewhat dated in its interior design, its tremendous reliability, efficiency and zero-fuss nature make it an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking dependable, frugal motoring.

Best for: Buyers seeking a dependable, frugal and effortless family car, those prioritising reliability and low running costs, and drivers wanting an efficient hybrid option.

Not ideal for: Those seeking dynamic driving engagement, premium interior design, or maximum rear seat space compared to rivals like the Skoda Octavia.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Auris if: You're seeking a dependable, frugal and effortless family car, prioritising reliability and low running costs, or wanting an efficient hybrid option.

Consider alternatives if: You desire dynamic driving engagement, premium interior design, or maximum rear seat space compared to rivals.

Competitive Position: The Toyota Auris (2012-2019) is a sensible choice in the used family hatchback market, offering excellent reliability, low running costs and ease of use. Whilst rivals like the Ford Focus offer sharper driving dynamics and the Vauxhall Astra provides better value deals, few can match Toyota's reputation for dependability. The Auris is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking zero-fuss, efficient motoring, though those prioritising driving engagement or interior design may find it somewhat dated compared to competitors.
