Toyota Hilux (2016-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Extremely capable off road | The 2.4-litre engine is lethargic compared with the latest 2.8 |
| Deserved reputation for toughness and durability | You get a longer warranty with a SsangYong Musso |
| Spacious load bed and high towing capacity | Steering feels vague |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Hilux (2016-present) is now in its eighth generation and has cemented its reputation as an ultra-tough workhorse capable of tackling serious terrain. Available in Double Cab, Single Cab, and Extra Cab configurations, it combines utilitarian roots with modern comforts and cutting-edge technology. The Double Cab is the most car-like, offering spacious rear seating, multiple storage solutions, and a commanding driving position. Most models are four-wheel drive with low-range capability, though two-wheel drive options exist. The interior feels solidly assembled with hard, wipe-clean plastics rather than premium materials, and the infotainment system is unremarkable but functional.
On the road, the Hilux drives reasonably well for a pick-up truck, though it's unsophisticated compared to SUVs. The rear suspension is firm and bouncy at low speeds due to its one-tonne payload capacity, and body roll through corners is noticeable with vague steering. However, off-road performance is excellent, with water-wading capability up to 700mm, serious approach and departure angles, and differential lock functionality. Engine options include a 2.4-litre diesel (148bhp) introduced at launch and a more powerful 2.8-litre diesel (201bhp) from 2020 onwards. Fuel economy ranges from 30mpg with the 2.4-litre to 33.2mpg with the 2.8-litre manual. Both six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available. Running costs benefit from flat-rate company car tax (£133 or £266) and Vehicle Excise Duty (£260), though insurance premiums may be higher. Annual servicing costs £250 for intermediate or £395 for full service.
Best for: Buyers seeking a tough, reliable workhorse with genuine off-road capability, those benefiting from company car tax advantages, and drivers needing high towing capacity and spacious load beds.
Not ideal for: Those prioritising car-like handling, smooth rides, or premium interior finishes, or drivers seeking the quietest or most refined driving experience.

The Verdict
You should buy the Hilux if: You need a tough, reliable workhorse with genuine off-road capability, benefit from company car tax advantages, or require high towing capacity and spacious load beds.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise car-like handling, smooth rides, premium interior finishes, or the quietest and most refined driving experience.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Hilux (2016-present) is an excellent all-rounder in the pick-up truck market, offering bulletproof reliability and outstanding off-road performance. Whilst the Ford Ranger edges ahead in user satisfaction and the Volkswagen Amarok provides a more premium experience, the Hilux remains a highly sensible choice for those seeking a genuine working vehicle with modern comforts. Its strong value proposition, combined with Toyota's renowned durability, makes it a compelling option that deserves serious consideration alongside its rivals.

4.6 Overall rating
(9 reviews)Lovely looking truck inside and out apart from underneath. This truck has rust problems underneath rear chassis and bed the rust has just been painted over and tried to be hidden. Paint is all peeling and rust is obvious when you look underneath the back end.
Great car with everything you can need for a private and commercial pick up
Great example for age and drives well. Paintwork is perfect and just look so nice all round
Always liked the Hilux. Feel very safe. Very easy to drive, cover ground well. Extra cab gives you a extra room with out feeling enormously to big to park
With one Hilux already in the stable, we have been searching for a second, to take on the duties of going off road on hilly Exmoor, and to pull a heavy stockbox full of sheep. The Hilux is tough, reliable and very good too when the tarmac runs out
