Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The hybrid sips fuel, especially around town | Quite cramped in the back |
| Promises the first-rate reliability you'd expect of Toyota | The 4x4 version has less luggage room |
| Lots of boot space for a small car | Not as much fun to drive as a Ford Puma |
Quick Summary
The Toyota Yaris Cross (2021-present) is a compact SUV that combines the town-friendly footprint of a small hatchback with the practicality and elevated seating position of a crossover. Based on the popular Yaris hatchback, it features high-quality interior plastics, well-screwed construction, and a functional infotainment system. The Yaris Cross offers 397 litres of boot space and comes with a traditional hybrid powertrain as standard, featuring a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and CVT transmission. A 2024 update introduced a more powerful 128bhp variant for higher-spec models, though the base 114bhp version remains adequate for everyday driving.
The Yaris Cross delivers between 55-60 mpg in everyday use, with urban driving particularly benefiting from its hybrid system through regenerative braking. Servicing costs are reasonable at Toyota dealers, and the engine uses a metal timing chain rather than a rubber belt, eliminating costly replacement expenses. With four trim levels from Icon to Excel, the car is well-equipped across the range, featuring adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as standard. Whilst it may not offer the driving engagement of a Ford Puma or the versatility of some rivals, the Yaris Cross excels in reliability, fuel efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, making it an excellent choice for those prioritising dependability and running costs.
Best for: Buyers seeking a reliable, fuel-efficient compact SUV with low running costs, families wanting a practical small car with elevated seating, and those prioritising Toyota's renowned dependability.
Not ideal for: Drivers wanting maximum rear legroom, those seeking engaging driving dynamics, or buyers requiring maximum boot space in the 4x4 variant.
Comparison vs Key Rivals
| Vehicle | CarGurus Expert Rating | CarGurus User Rating | Good/Great deals % | Overall CarGurus Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Yaris Cross | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 33.7% | 4.3/5 |
| Ford Puma | 5/5 | 5.0/5 | 34.6% | 4.6/5 |
| Renault Captur | 4/5 | 4.4/5 | 34.0% | 4.4/5 |
| Hyundai Bayon | 3/5 | 5.0/5 | 32.6% | 4.2/5 |
The Verdict
You should buy the Yaris Cross if: You prioritise reliability and low running costs, seek a practical compact SUV with good fuel efficiency, or want a dependable family car with elevated seating and Toyota's renowned build quality.
Consider alternatives if: You desire engaging driving dynamics like the Ford Puma, need maximum rear legroom, or require maximum boot space in a four-wheel-drive variant.
Competitive Position: The Toyota Yaris Cross is a strong contender in the compact SUV market, offering exceptional reliability, impressive fuel economy, and reasonable servicing costs. Whilst the Ford Puma edges ahead with superior driving engagement and the Renault Captur offers greater versatility, the Yaris Cross excels in dependability and cost-effectiveness. Its hybrid powertrain, well-equipped trim levels, and Toyota's reputation for longevity make it an outstanding choice for practical, budget-conscious buyers who value reliability over driving thrills. The Hyundai Bayon offers similar value but lacks the Yaris Cross's proven track record.

5 Overall rating
(3 reviews)The car is of a good value. Everything seems to work well except the automatic parking functionality.
Heads up option. I like the hybrid recharging and don't want a battery only car.Long journeys mean recharging. I like the driving position of an SUV and dont need the size of my RAV 4 still!
I like the AWD version though I think all of the hybrid cars in SUV form are expensive and I will wait before changing my diesel RAV AWD.
