Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheap as a used buy | Drab interior |
| Lots of standard equipment | Many rivals are more practical |
| Later diesel engines were punchy | Not that great on the road |
Quick Summary
The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) was positioned as an affordable SUV, initially priced under £20,000, offering good value. Available with a 2.4-litre petrol or a more popular 2.0 CDTi diesel, it was discontinued in 2015. While not particularly practical for its size, offering 420 litres of boot space (1,420 with seats folded), it provides ample room for five occupants. The interior finish is somewhat basic, and it was strictly a five-seater, unlike its seven-seat Chevrolet Captiva relative.
Driving dynamics were generally lukewarm, though later 2.2-litre diesels (161bhp or 181bhp from 2010) offered better performance and improved economy. Initial models were well-equipped, including stability control, 4WD, hill descent control, and air-conditioning, with higher trims adding climate control, heated seats, and satnav. Running costs are middling; petrol versions are thirsty (mid-20s mpg real-world), while diesels offer better, though not class-leading, economy (around 30-35mpg real-world for later 2.2 CDTi models). Road tax can be steep due to higher emissions.
Best for: Drivers on a budget, those seeking a well-equipped SUV for the price, and buyers who prioritize later, punchy diesel engines.
Not ideal for: Buyers prioritising engaging driving dynamics, premium interior quality, class-leading practicality, or low running costs compared to more efficient rivals.

The Verdict
You should buy the Antara if: You're on a budget, seeking a well-equipped SUV for the price, or looking for a model with later, punchy diesel engines.
Consider alternatives if: You prioritise engaging driving dynamics, premium interior quality, class-leading practicality, or lower running costs.
Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Antara (2007-2015) offers undeniable value as a used SUV, particularly for those seeking a highly equipped vehicle for a low price. While its driving dynamics and interior quality are not class-leading, and practicality is only average for its size, the improved later diesel engines provide decent performance. It stands as an affordable option for budget-conscious buyers, though rivals like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 offer greater refinement and dependability.

4.4 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Lovely comfortable ride, spacious interior and great ride height, good sized boot. Not impressed with the road tax bracket.
The car is great without faults and very neat. The price matches the value
Very good and reliable car and is good value. I would think it compares very favourable with other cars of the same type
Looks excellent, I would go for the SE Nav 163 and try to find one with a sunroof. I would compare it to the Ford Kuga in lots of ways. The Antara is probably a better tow car though.
Great big comfy car, plenty room in it, family car
