Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport (2017-2021) Pros and Cons

Pros	Cons
Keenly priced on the used market	Not at all sporty to drive
Economical diesels are ideal for motorway driving	The Country Tourer isn't necessarily four-wheel drive
Well equipped whichever model you choose	A Skoda Superb is much more spacious

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport (2017-2021) is a D-segment saloon-styled five-door hatchback that competes with the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat. Available as a Grand Sport hatchback, Sports Tourer estate, or Country Tourer with extra cladding, it was primarily aimed at the company car market. Engine options range from a 1.6-litre diesel with 109bhp to a 207bhp twin-turbo diesel in the GSi model, with four petrol alternatives in between. The 1.5-litre petrol with 163bhp offers the best balance of performance, torque, and fuel economy. All versions are well equipped, with the SRi trim offering dual-zone climate control, cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers, and parking sensors as standard.

The Insignia Grand Sport is a solid, sensible, and dependable family choice offering plenty of space and equipment at reasonable cost. The boot holds 490 litres, expanding to 1,450 litres with rear seats folded. Economical diesels achieve around 55mpg, whilst the 1.5-litre petrol manages approximately 45mpg. Most models feature timing chains, reducing maintenance costs, though 2.0-litre diesels require timing belt replacement every six years or 100,000 miles. Used examples are abundant with strong depreciation making them excellent second-hand value. However, it lacks the sportiness of dedicated driver's cars and the Skoda Superb offers superior spaciousness.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious, well-equipped family car; company car users; those prioritising motorway comfort and economical diesel engines.

Not ideal for: Drivers wanting a sporty, engaging driving experience; buyers requiring maximum interior space; those seeking premium badge appeal.

Comparison vs Key Rivals

The Verdict

You should buy the Insignia Grand Sport if: You're seeking a spacious, well-equipped family car on a budget; you prioritise motorway comfort and economical diesel engines; or you want strong used car value.

Consider alternatives if: You desire a sporty, engaging driving experience; you need maximum interior space; or you prioritise premium badge appeal.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport is a worthy contender in the D-segment market, offering excellent value and strong user satisfaction. Whilst the Skoda Superb surpasses it in spaciousness and the Ford Mondeo Mk4 offers superior driving dynamics, the Insignia Grand Sport's keen pricing, well-equipped specification, and economical diesel options make it an intelligent choice for budget-conscious family buyers. Its abundance on the used market and strong depreciation create compelling second-hand value, particularly for those prioritising practicality and equipment over sporting credentials.
