Vauxhall Viva (2015-2019) Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
A very affordable used buy Many rivals are more practical
Easy to drive So-so warranty offering
Decent equipment Feels bland compared with many cars in the class

Quick Summary

The Vauxhall Viva (2015-2019) is a five-door city car offering buyers a smaller, more affordable alternative to the brand's Adam and Corsa superminis. With a tiny footprint and low running costs, it competes directly with the Ford Ka+, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo, Skoda Citigo, and Seat Mii. The Viva is easy to drive with light controls, a composed ride, and safe, steady handling. However, it lacks the engaging driving dynamics of some rivals and the 1.0-litre engine requires effort on higher-speed roads.

The 74bhp naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine delivers impressive economy, achieving 62.8mpg officially and low 50s in real-world conditions. Running costs are minimal thanks to a timing chain instead of a belt, low weight reducing wear on consumables, and servicing required only every 20,000 miles. The Viva offers good equipment levels, including cruise control, lane departure warning, and air conditioning as an option. Boot space is modest at 206 litres with rear seats in place, expanding to 1,013 litres when folded. As a used prospect, the Viva represents excellent value for budget-conscious buyers seeking a neat city car for around-town driving.

Best for: Budget-conscious buyers, those needing a compact city car for short trips and urban driving, and drivers prioritising low running costs and affordability.

Not ideal for: Buyers requiring maximum practicality, those tackling longer drives regularly, or those seeking engaging driving dynamics and premium feel.

The Verdict

You should buy the Viva if: You're budget-conscious, need a compact city car for short trips and urban driving, or prioritise low running costs and affordability.

Consider alternatives if: You require maximum practicality, regularly tackle longer drives, or seek engaging driving dynamics and premium feel.

Competitive Position: The Vauxhall Viva (2015-2019) is a sensible choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable city car. However, it faces stiff competition from more capable alternatives. The Dacia Sandero offers better practicality and user satisfaction, the Suzuki Celerio provides more equipment as standard, and the Hyundai i10 delivers superior driving dynamics and overall quality. As a used prospect, the Viva's low purchase price makes it worthy of consideration for around-town driving, but buyers tackling longer journeys should consider paying a premium for a more capable alternative such as the Skoda Citigo.

i bought a 2nd hand viva in april 2021. so far i am very pleased with it. cheap road tax insurance and low petrol consumption. very reliable and it has passed 4 mots with some advisories but not serious or expensive ones. mainly worn tyres that need replacing.comfortable car and well equipped.my only complaint is no cd player and the radio is not dab. the reception is rubbish very poor quality radio and i thought it would be a better one in a top of range car. 29,000 miles 0n clock when i bought it now 46,000 miles. very few problems as a whole. i would recommend buying one of these car as an economical runaround.could do with more legroom
